Open Incision Site Seroma How Long To Heal

I just found out I have a 5cm long seroma and 2.5 cm deep. Home health care nurses come twice daily to pack wound. Doctor Monday popped seroma on table, how gross, I thought he poured peroxide on my incision. I was going to go back to work 6 wks postop on 6/18/07 but with the seroma just developed on 05/21/07 what do you all think? I am asking the phy to keep me off of work until 7/16/07, is this unrealistic? I now have 3 children, hands full and I can't seem to relax like I am suppose to. Hubby helps but I am always a busy body. Nurses say I am not slow healer but not fast healer. I am 33 and it is not infected but I am running fever and I have been on antibiotics since seroma developed. Any information would be helpful. I feel as though I am in the dark. Thanks, Kellie

Kellie - is a seroma a pocket of fluid that won't stop leaking? I'm wondering the same thing you are... I had a c-section on 5/22 and the dr worked on the seroma yesterday (5/31) but it's still leaking fluid. It sounds like asking for an extra month off is a good idea to give you more time to heal, especially since it sounds like your hands are full. Hopefully someone with some more experience with this will share some knowledge with us.

Hi KelliAnn, I am preg with my first and having a c-section... but at 16 I had a c-section cut to remove a 3kg cyst onmy right ovary. I was sutured together with staples, and am allergic to nickel (which is in most metals). A week after I was discharged my incision split open (seroma developed at bottom of incision and burst). I was placed back into hospital and place on strong antibiotics intravenously for 2 weeks. I then had nurses come each day and pack the wound. This lasted for approx. a month, month and a half. I do not think you are being unrealistic. I was 16, a non smoker, had had an appendectomy done when i was 12 with no problems and it still took me a good 2 to 2 and a half months to go back to school. I now have a wide scar (almost an inch across!) but I am having the c-section as the docs are fixing my scar from last time. I think you really need to give yourself the healing time... especially with a new baby and 2 children... you will not get as much rest as quickly as someone without children. And i know it can be hard to accept help becuase it can make you feel inadequate... but c'mon you've justhad surgery and a baby and you still need to heal! Take that help hun! Good luck hun... hope that you are feeling better real soon!
