About Right After Your C Section

I was just wondering when you actually get to hold your baby after a c-section. Will they bring them right to you so you can at least see them or what?

With my oldest he was an emergency c-section after a long labor. After he was born and wiped up and wrapped they gave him to dh. He held him up to me, but I am almost blind w/out my gla__ses, so I couldn't see him very well. That was for a few minutes, then they took him to the nursery. I kept calling and calling the nurses station and noone would bring him to me. I was p__sed. He was born at 12:53am and I didn't get to hold him or see him again until 7:00am when I said I was getting up and coming to the nursery right then and there if I didn't see my son right away. With my daugher she had a problem during the birth and had to go to NICU. They suctioned her airway in the OR... I could see it. She didn't cry or anything so I was terrified. Eventually she pinked up a bit and gave a weak little cry and dh was allowed to bring her over for a minute, but then she had to go to NICU. When I was done being st_tched and spent about 1/2 hour in recovery they wheeled my whole bed into NICU for me to see her. I was there for just a couple of minutes, but another set of parents came in and it was too crowded with my bed in there, so I went to my room. As soon as I could feel my legs (maybe 2-3 hours) they got me up cleand up a bit and into a wheelchair to go see her and I actually got to sit and hold her in there. Since she wasn't in my room I had to get up and go down to NICU about every 2 hours, although sometimes there were several hours where noone is allowed in... I think the reason was that they have shift changes and discuss the babies and it's confidential and noone is allowed in during those hours. It felt so sad to have times where I could not see her, but thankfully it was only 3 days.... anyway, then with my 3rd (ds) I had to be under general anesthesia for low platelets (too low to safely do a spinal). I didn't wake up for about 3 hours, then I was in recovery and then taken to my room. I hadn't seen him AT ALL and I was getting a little frantic. Finally they got me up and out of bed about 7 hours after the surgery and I sat in a chair and nursed him. My parents and other kids had come and gone, so at least it was a really peaceful bonding time. So those were my experiences.

Oh, I was allowed to have my gla__ses on for my section with my daughter (#2)... they had changed the rules about that b/w my 1st and 2nd sections. I couldn't for the 3rd, though, because of the general anesth. and breathing tube.

Once they got my daughter out and cleaned her up (about 5 -10mions) her dad was able to hold her and bring her to me while they finished closing me, my section went very smooth so by the time i was giving my new baby kisses and seeing her sweet face for the first time i was closed up and we all went to recovery, they laid her with me (i had complete use of my upper body i was numb from mid-nipple down) and she latched on like a pro...she was with me from then on, the hospital i was at had a nursey but if everything is ok with you and baby they olny take baby to nursery if you request it (maybe to grab some Z's LOL) i didn't want her going anywhere so she never left me. I also had a planned section and that can make a huge difference... is yours planned?

With my 1st, they held her up right away over the blue drape so I could see her. It's sort of a vivid memory for me because the bright surgical light was back-lighting the blue drape, and when they popped her up there some dark sloppy goo splashed onto the backside of the drape and looked really nasty. With my 2nd, they took him off to the side to clean him up and my husband was just cheering "He's huge! He's huge." Then my husband brought him over to me while the docs were sewing me up.

Thanks, everyone. I don't have one planned. Just a possibility. I was just curious as to what to expect if they do decide that route.
