When you're put to sleep during the c-section, it increases the chances of you or the baby dying. It's not that bad to be awake for it...you get to hear your baby's first cry, and the baby's father is allowed to be present too.

I was awake during mine and I would not trade hearing my son's first cry for anything in the world, it was the most beautiful sound and is forever burned in my mind. You don't want to miss the first moment you really become a mother. I had an epidural, mine was an emergency C and the epidural was already in so they just increased the dose. All I felt was a little tugging and pulling that was NOT uncomfortable, just wierd. You don't see them cutting, you are blocked with a drape. As soon as they were done st_tching me up I was able to nurse and hold my son also. You won't be able to do that if you are knocked out.

They should have tested your feeling BEFORE starting to cut...don't let jen's post scare you.

they couldnt get my epidural to take and my baby was in trouble as I had severe pre-eclampsia, so they finally put me to sleep. I missed out on seeing my DD till she was over half an hour old and didnt hear her first cry. DH also was not allowed in the room with me being out.....If you can avoid it, stay awake. I was a nursing student and saw 3 c-sections performed with the mothers awake, you wont feel anything but pressure and tugging, no pain.
