I am due for a c-section in may. This will be my second, with my first I had an emergency c-section and had already had an epidural. My question is when it is planned, how do they do it, do you get an epidural if so, can you feel it, is it painful?

You will get a spinal which is also put in your mid back. It will pinch and possibly sting, burn and ache. In my case they hit a nerve and my leg shot out, but it is tolerable. I got a high spinal so it caused low blood pressure and I vomited on the table but they gave me oxygen. The operation is a lot of pressure, tugging, pulling and when they press on you diaphram you can perceive it either as tremendous force or for some it is a bit painful. Afterwards you will have pain meds in your IV and as the spinal and pain meds wear off you will slowly start feeling a gradual increase in post-op pain. Use your pain pump and/or keep on the nurses to administer the meds in advance of peak pain. You will have some pain, for you had surgery.

I had a spinal for both my girls and really had no problems. It was a little painful afterward but I figure it is painful wheather you go natural or c-section. My biggest piece of advice is follow what the nurses tell you to do. They know how long you will need to lay flat and all of that!
