Taking Care Of Toddler After Section

I am going to have my second section in January and my son will just be turning one years of age. Has anyone had a section and had to come home and take care of two children? When will I be safe enough to lift my son in and out of his crib?

I had four c-sections in exactly 4 years to the day...I had no choice but to have the c-sects and I had no choice but to lift not one, but four tiny humans all day everyday. I do not advise another c if you can help it. I won't pull punches here, it was very difficult to #1 leave my little ones for the time you have to stay in the hospital due to surgery and #2 it was pretty hard and painful to care for such tiny kids right after pregnancy and c-sections. I actually had longer, more painful recoveries with my subsequent c-sections and that was due partly to how close they were and partly because I didn't get time to rest and recover. I suggest if it is possible to have a VBAC, but if not, make sure you have LOT"S of DAILY help, and take your pain pills...time your one year-old's nap with when you can nurse the newborn and the three of you can sleep in your bed for that nap. Mostly, just realize that you can't reason with a 1 year-old about your wound, your exhaustion and the fact that you have TWO babies and just cry when you feel like it. Somehow it all works out (painfully sometimes) and I really have mostly fond memories of all those babies I had. Be advised, your one-year-old WILL climb on your incision and really watch out for his quick feet!!!!! Good luck!

Yes i agree with Djh that u shouldnt have another c section if you dont need one. I had my 2nd c section when my daughter was 14 mths old. She wasnt even walking so i had to carry he everywhere and it was so painful at times and i too hated leaving her while i was in hospital for 4 days. I missed her terribly and when i got back it was so hard. It took me twice as long to recover. Im pregnant with my 3rd child now and will be having to have another c section ( none of mine were my choice ) . Its going to be abit easier this time im guessing because my kids are 5 and 4 but its still going to be hard because they have to go school and will always be on the go. Goodluck if u have to have another c section is it hard but u do get through it. =)

My babies were 11 and a half months apart and my doctor actually wanted me to try and delvier v____ally since she was so concerned about me going home and having to take care of a newborn and an 11 month old. She felt it would be safer for me if I could have a v____al recovery since I wouldn't get the proper rest one needs after a surgical birth and she was very concerned that I would do too much especially the lifting. I was able to deliver VBAC and I must say, while not easy, it was not as bad a recovery as my c-section and it did help alot in keeping up with two babies. I am glad she had faith in her skills as my doctor, the nurses in charge of my VBAC and in ME...Good luck.

It is definitly hard and in some cases dangerous to have TWO babies essenitally at home after a c-section. I agree with the above posters who say you should think about a VBAC if you are going to have to go home to a one-year-old too. Even if the c-section goes well, the recovery is hindered by the extra demands of another baby at a different stage who still needs you just as much as your newborn. Plus, the 1 year-old and the newborn probably will not cooperate with naps sometimes and you will be tired and sore. But if a VBAC isn't possible, just have as much help as you can, if nothing more than an hour ot two a day so you can get a bit of rest. Good luck.
