What Caused Your C Section

Hi ladies. I am pg with my first baby. I would like to hear from those of you who did not expect a c-section but ended up with one. I want to avoid one if at all possible. I am in good health, no problems so far at 20 weeks and am neither too thin or too heavy. So far, the only thing my doctor has said is inductions and epidurals may contribute to failure to progress and an increased risk of c-section. Any help appreciated!

Hi, in my case, a juvenile pelvis which could only accomodate a 2 pound baby (they estimated) and a 7 pound baby with a 14 inch head!!! I suggest you eat healthfully, keep up a fitness routine and avoid artificial rupture of the membranes (you have set the timer that way), inductions (unless overdue) and as light an epidural after 4 cm as you can handle. Best of luck to you.

Mine was due to a breach baby diagnosed at 32 weeks. Dr said he see very few turn after that point. He was right for mine and had a c section at 39 weeks.

My dr will not turn babies in the uterus after too many bad outcomes.

If you are in good health and the baby is too, you have a good chance of having a v____al delivery if you don't have too many interventions, some of which are mistakenly meant to "help" the mother in labor. Take cla__ses, read everything, and try to be as much of an actual participant in birthing your baby yourself as possible. Walking around in labor and changing positions can many times improve descent of the baby and help rotate it's head so it presents properly once in the birth ca___l. Keep in mind, sometimes you do everything right and the baby just doesn't tolerate labor. On the other hand, study after study has proven that external fetal monitoring has caused many an unnecessary c-section, so be wary of constant monitoring and ask instead, that they periodically check your baby's heartrate instead.

I labored naturally for 9 hours and I got an infection 4 hours after they broke my water. The doctor said it is fairly common, but usually happens after a much longer labor. My fever and the infection in my uterus meant we couldn't wait around for labor to progess (I was already 8cm). I did everything right with my pregnancy, labor, and still had an emergency c section.

Well, my son just could not fit through my pelvis. I made it to 8cm and there was no way that he was going to make it. He was 9lbs 9oz. I agree with Yanna, but sometimes all the education in the world won't help. I was well informed, read everything that I could get my hands on, but I still had to have a c/s. I think that you should always expect the unexpected so that you are not distraught when something happens that you did not plan for. That is what happened in my case. Good luck on your pregnancy and try not to worry.

I have to say the only thing that caused my c-section was my own stupidity. I actually CHOSE one and it was one of the biggest mistakes I have made. I thought I was getting out of pain and stuff...I was wrong. Hope you don't need one.

Hi Julia, sometimes mom is just too narrow for her particular baby or complications occur that can't be predicted before labor or attempts at pushing. Many times things go just fine. I hope you get a short, uncomplicated delivery and you and baby are both healthy at the end of the day. Sounds like your doctor has faith in women and their bodies and will not interfere too much with nature unless someone needs it. That is the best chance for you to have the birth you wish for. Listen to your doctor and your own body and you will do well.

Well, I wasn't expecting one but just found out today that baby is too big and won't engage. If he doesn;t drop this weekend I will be having a section on Tuesday. I wish people on this board would stop sharing horror stories, I must admit they are really freaking me out now. :(

TC - January 21

Bonnie, I would advise you to take it easy. Enjoy your last days with your partner without the baby and try and relax. Finish packing bc now you are going to need more stuff. You are going to be in the hospital longer. If I was you, I would not take a look at anything that says c/s. I saw your question on the Infant Care and I think that you might be stressing yourself out. Good luck honey.

I know it is scary, but Bonnie, it would not be fair to only share the best outcomes. I am searching for info too, and I would be very angry if all I heard was good things. All one has to do is look around and you will see good and bad outcomes in everything. I for one, do not want to end up with a c-section and go in thinking everything is going to be great from that point on. I agree, I do not want to think only of the bad either. I read the v____al posts and there are some good and some not, same must be true for c-sections too. Family is for stressing the good sides of things, forums are for getting all sides. It is not fair to allow v____al moms to say how awful their deliveries were and not allow c-section moms the same right for they have a right to speak also. I am not going to worry too much, I want a healthy baby, but in a perfect world I want a tolerable, safe, v____al delivery. I hope your baby drops, but my doc said sometimes babies don't drop until you are in active labor. Of course, if the baby is huge and they know it that might be different.

Faith - January 21

To Bonnie: it is a tough thing to deal with an upcoming and unexpected surgery. But to say you wish others wouldn't share their "horror" stories is unfair. It is not the job of posters to deny their own experiences and pretend everything was peachy if it wasn't. I don't think the only posts allowed are those that sing praises. To be informed you need all sides and you need to learn to go with it, good and bad. To original poster, just do what your doctor says and move about as much as possible in labor, it helps move the baby down.

I had to have a c-section at 35 weeks because I was carrying breeched twins and I had severe pre-clampsia.

Foolishness - January 22

I let the doctor break my water and that set a timer, I was moving along, but some magic number said "c-section" time just because of a risk of infection. I didn't even have a temp, and was 8 cm when he said it had been 12 hours from water breaking and that was "his limit"...a bunch of junk, even the nurses said I should have been allowed to continue. Labor was fine, much better than the pain after the c-section.

Hello, I recently had a c-section this month. My pregnancy was perfectly normal and even my labor was progressing fine (a bit long but baby was tolerating without an issue. However, when it came to pushing, thats when the trouble began. I pushed for about 2 hours without the baby moving at all!!!! So they gave me two options, c-section or continue pushing for another hour! The dr. was not confident that more pushing would help at all. So I opted for the c-section. I was soooo tired after all that pushing. I wish you luck and hope that your labor plan works for you. However, if you do require a c-section its not the end of the world (i went in with a negative view of c-sections, it really was not that bad)!
