I have been hearing a lot lately that Soy is not good for health. I drink Soy Milk everyday... is it ok? What about other soy products like Tofu?

The latest studies that I have read show that soy is VERY good for you. Drink your soy milk and eat your tofu. You are starting you baby off on a path to good health. (Yes, I'm a Registered Diet_tian and a vegetarian.)

I drink about half a liter of soy milk every day, I'm also vegetarian (90% vegan) and I think there is no healthier way to start off a new life! (Otherwise I wouldn't be doing it!) So, do carry on, good luck!

i have decided to stay away from soy products (ttc, miscarried in october) after reading about the hormones they contain and potential effects on development of male s_x organs. do a google search on soy and pregnancy and you should find a few things. I was a heavy soy milk and tofu eater so it was tough to give up but i am convinced the potential risks are real.

I personally have never tried a soy product nor thought about it. The thought of Tofu seems strange, but I am a very picky eater in general. What does soy milk even taste like? And whats the point of drinking it? To get away from harmful cow's milk? Well what ingredients are in soy milk? It has shelf life don't it, so it's gpt preservatives and stuff right..how much safer is it than dairy? I truly have no clue..guess I'll research this one.

krc, I don't know the answers to all your questions, but there are various reasons why people drink soy milk or eat tofu. Some people are vegans and do not eat any animal products, so soy is an alternative that provides similar nutrients. Soy milk is kind of sweet, but some people prefer the taste to cow's milk and drink it for no other reason than that. Also a lot of people are allergic to dairy or are lactose intolerant, so they drink soy milk as an alternative. As for ingredients or preservatives, not sure about that.

Soy is also very bad for your thyroid. If you have thyroid dieseas, don't touch it. Soy and all of its various forms (such as soy lecithin) are in most food products. You've gotta read the labels carefully. http://www.soyonlineservice.co.nz/04birthdefects.htm

I drink soy milk and I also eat tofu, I have had cravings for it. I drink the enhanced kind so it has vitamins added to it. I haven't noticed any problems, I did however have a huge craving for dairy products a few weeks ago and drank reg. milk. I get really phlegmy when I drink it, but I figured my baby needed something in it so I had it. I would conitnue to drink it.

what nutrition tests did you do? blood tests? i keep getting referrals to nutritionists that just plan and look at your diet. I am so aware of my intake and what i eat - i know i eat very well ballanced nutritioned meals. i have been a veggie for 20 years and am perfectly healthy....
however, now when pregnant i want to make sure my nutrition levels are perfect and want to have tests done to prove it to myself...how did you get your results done..by a nutritionist?

I think that both sides are wrong...when dealing with our bodies, it can be harmful to look at nutrition as a one-size-fits-all thing. What is good for one woman may not be good for another. Soy is not to be used by women with b___st cancer history because of the phyto-estrogens in it. For the same reason, it CAN be harmful during pregnancy. I myself am a big soy drinker and didn't even think about the possible negative effects of soy until I got pregnant and had severe morning sickness and cramping until I snapped and realized it was the estrogen in the soy. I haven't had a problem with soy before, but apparently my hormones are off balance with this pregnancy and my body is not making enough progesterone to counteract the estrogen. Had I continued, I might have put myself at risk for a miscarriage. Once I stopped the soy I felt fine, but that is because I have sound facts about the foods I eat and I listen to MY OWN body, not what others may say. Until recent times before the mostly male-dominated medical field came into power, women were often the best sources of advice on health and wellness precisely because we are so in tune with our bodies, so girls LISTEN TO WHAT YOUR BODY IS SAYING!! Sure, it's good to get advice from others, but don't make your decision solely based on what your doctor or some message board says!! Namaste!
