Should Folic Acid be taken only during first 3 months of pregnancy or for the full term? Will excess of it cause any problem?

I'm not a Dr, but I have read that even if you plan to get pregnant you should start taking folic acid before trying. My Dr recommend to me to take 400 mcg a day. This is my second pregnancy and have taken that amount through out both, and have been fine. Folic acid is suppose to help your baby's development and put it at less risk for problems. Ask your Dr if your concerned.

NO, taking it before you are pregnant is the most important, and continue using it throughout the entire pregnancy!

Correct me if I'm wrong, I believe folic acid is for the development of the baby's spine (to avoid spina bifida) as well as help you to avoid charlie horses in the middle of the night. It also helps to get folic acid by eating lots of dark leafy green veggies and oranges thruout pregnancy.

I work at a hospital and a friend who is a nurse told me to drink lots of orange juice for the folic acid to help not only prevent spinal bifida but downs syndrome. She said the folic acid also plays apart in the forming of the brain functions. So girls drink or OJ every chance you get.
