Hello Calitrish and Linda99, Thanks for your response. Calitrish I have nevver checked my ketone bodies on my own but at my doctor's appointment they always check my urine for ketone bodies and have never found any ketone bodies. I guess your theory of long fasting hours seems to be the culprit in my case. After some research I found out someting called Somogyi's effect where blood glucose levels fall at early hours in morning and body responds by rebound hyperglycemia. Another effect called Dawn's effect where certain hormones levels are released in early morning hours to repair and maintain the body and they have opposite effect on insulin. to check either phenomenon I have to check my Bl gluose levels at about 3am. If they are low I have somogyi's effect and if they are high I have dawn's effect. I will have to adjust my evening snack in either case.

Learn something new every day - I've definitely witnessed the Somogyi's effect. Course mine is likely drug induced. When they initially put me on Glyburide at bedtime and when they upped the dosage at 22 weeks to stabilize my fasting levels, they had me wake up at 3am to check my levels for 3 days in a row. If I fell below 70, they had me drink a gla__s of juice and check again in 15 minutes. Since then, I've learned I can drop down to 60 without being symptomatic. Oddly, I discovered my levels would drop down this low if I either I skipped my bedtime snack or I ate too big of a snack. A half sandwich & a gla__s of milk seems to work these days - a full sandwich was too much. Even after dealing with GD for 21 weeks, I still experience a lot of trial & error with my GD diet.

Hi girls. Well after testing this morning I'm starting to wonder if the milk at night is what's helping the ketones stay down. I didn't have any last night and they were up this morning. I know it's going to take some time to get this diet right, but I feel like by the time I do I'll have delivered! It's so frustrating. Yesterday I had a VERY low carb breakfast and still tested high, I can't figure it out at all. I'm always hungry and after I eat my meal I'm stuck waiting for two hours before I can have something else. It definitely hasn't helped that I'm a picky eater. I just keep trying to remind myself, at least I have food, at least I can eat, some people are not so fortunate. 11 weeks to go!

Ketones are usually present if you aren't getting enough calories, which might also be why you're always hungry. Try increasing your protein and veggie intake. The important thing is that you are trying to get your GD under control. It will take time and you won't always be perfect, but it's better for you and baby that you continue to try.

Thanks for the support CaliTrish. I guess maybe I'm not getting enough calories, but how much protien can one person eat?! I'm sorry to say I'm not a big vegetable eater so my choices are limited. I don't like tofu and veggie patties so to try and find something I do like that is good for me to eat is really hard. I must sound like such a baby, but I'm not sure what to do. One meal at a time... that's all I have to do right? :-)

Yep, one meal at a time - next thing you know - it'll be delivery time. Some protein alternatives besides meat are cheese, eggs, natural peanut b___ter, nuts, & cottage cheese. When it comes to a GD diet - protein/meat is better for you than veggies - fewer carbs.
