Folic Acid For How Long

Just wondering how far into the pregnancy are you supposed to continue taking folic acid?

Erin - April 13

My doctor said that it's needed for the first trimester, by then the neural tube is completely developed and it should have done it's job in preventing defects. Hope that helps. Good luck!=)

The neural tube is completely formed and closed by the end of the 5th week of pregnancy. After that, FA is beneficial to the placenta as it facilitates cell division. Taking FA after the NT has closed will not undo any damage or defects that may have occurred.
