I am 27 weeks preganat and gound ou last week I am iron deficiant and have anemia. I was relived to know why I was feeling so tired, but I am not worried about my condition. My midwife has me taking SlowFE once a day (50mg) anlong with my prenatal vitamin. My question how much is too much iron? My own research on the internet say I can take more than what I am taking...if you had to take supplements how much did you take? My ohter fear is needig a blood transfusion after delivery. Have any of experieced this and how did it go? One last question...my midwife gave me a list of iron rich foods, do you have suggestions of some quick easy ways to get iron into your diet? I love milk and dairy foods and now found out calcium hinders iron absorbption...i am afraid to eat of drink anything dairy. I feel like I am going nuts here!

Staying away from dairy can be very hard, just cut out the big things like milk, cheese, and ice cream for a while. Be careful about taking lots of iron in supplement form. It can cause constipation in a really bad way! Try taking backstrap mola__sas 1 tablespoon 2 times a day. You will find that your levels will be fine in under a week.

i'm also 27wks and i just found out at my dr. appt. today that my iron is low...even though i'm taking a prenatal vitamin and an iron supplement. my doc just told me to double up on my supplement and wrote me another perscription. did you have any other symptoms besides fatigue? my biggest problem these last few weeks has been shortness of breath. i feel like i have asthma. if i hear of any other quick ways to get it into your system besides supplements, i'll let you know. i hope you feel better soon.

Dairy foods affecting iron absorbption, I haven't heard that one. It's funny because to boost my iron I'm drinking milk that has iron, vit C and calcium added to it. Pisotacho nuts are high in Iron and cashew nuts. I love cereal, so I choose ones with the highest levels of iron. Just some ideas.

thanks for your response...I too just found out that there are many nuts that are high in iron. I love pastacios and chashews. as far as the fact of milk hindering iron absoption..I guess they recommend that you NOT take you iron pill with milk and try not consume dairy 2 hours before and after you take your pill. I don't that's just what I have been told.

The quickest and easiest way to raise your iron is to take a TABLESPOON of BLACKSTRAP MOLASSAS 3 times a day. It must be Blackstrap, others won't work. Get a blood test after a week or so to check. It should be fine by then. By the way dairy will block absorption, so stay away from it as much as you can.

Jan, is Blackstrap mola__sas gross? I may give it a try...but i need to be warned. Thanks

It doesn't tast too bad. It's pretty sweet. You can spread it on whole wheat bread to tone it down. I've had many of my clients do it, and none have complained. Some even like it. Kids take it with no problem, I'm sure you'll do fine.

I am almost 25 weeks and I just got an iron supplement, my blood type is somewhat rare, and knowing that I may have to get a transfusion after delivery scares me. Do you always have to get a transfusion? They told me to take the supplement with OJ and not milk or dairy, they said the OJ will absorb it faster. I was also told red meat is a huge source. I hadn't heard about the nuts, I love cashews as well, I will have to try those.
