No, they're not safe for your baby.

Interesting - December 2

I just did a search on google to get an answer for myself about diet pills and pregnancy, and the effects on a pregnant women and the fetus. I happen to stumble onto this forum and am surprised by the amount of hostile tone of these posts. How embarra__sing and offensive! Where's the moderator? I'm b__wn away by this. Let me get out of here before I get more angry...

agree with E - December 2

ask your doctor.

are you kidding me?!?! - December 4

You people are mean. I would like to know the answer. Maybe someone else had asked their doctor and knows the answer. I can't believe you people actually reproduce!!!

Okay, I admit that diet pills are unsafe but tthere are people like some of you said who take them in order to feel good. In unplanned pregnanccy I feel that asking this question is responsible on the part of the future mother. She IS worried about wwhat effect the pills has had on the pregnancy sso far. Whether she chooses to stop ultimatly is her choice however obviously is not in the best interest of the baby.

I just found out I'm pregnant, and came on this site to see what other insightful, helpful, empathetic mommy's-to-be were saying. Oh my God. If someone asks a question, they are looking for some insight, or opinion, certainly not hostility and outright name calling. Just because we can't see the face of the women doesn't mean there isn't a human being there- with feelings. Let's face it. we're women, just because we're pregnant, doesn't mean we don't want to look attractive, and we're all of a sudden going to stop feeling vulnerable. And for those ladies on this site sitting in their ivory towers, throwing down hateful comments to others, if you have grown children, why are you still going on these chat rooms? shouldn't you be pa__sing along all those warm and fuzzy feelings to your child??

This is a hard subject. There are many girls who are taking, and took, diet pills during the entire pregnancy (including the majority of our mothers who were perscribed them back then during the first OB visit). This topic is great and needs to be explored. Many girls are scared to say they are taking diet pills while pregnant and by lashing them to shreds won't make them talk freely here. So honestly, I will tell you I am 5 months pregnant and took Phentermine the first two months everyday. I weaned myself off to maybe one a week and promptly gained 20 pounds to date. I still take a half of one maybe once a week when I feel so awful looking I can't stand it. I have had 4 ultrasounds and an amnio so far. Baby is PERFECT. I had a great body to begin with; my husband is a model and image is very important. I have always had low self body image and now being pregnant gaining all this weight is doing a number on me. I do not feel s_xy, beautiful, or even cute and if a half a diet pill once a week will make me feel better, oh well. Any girl who wants to talk about this subject I will talk open and honest. I told my doctor too and he knows. Guess what else? I went to a tanning salon and tanned (still do), smoked for the first three months, took Aleve, had a couple drinks, ate ho-ho's and twinkies for a week straight and skipped those pre-natal vitamins a couple of days. Who else wants to be honest here?

Sue your honesty is rare and refreshing. Hearing of your experience helps more than 95% of the postings. Being helpful and non-judgemental is crucial to motherhood. I will stop taking Hydroxycut now as I will begin to start trying to get pregnant. But I won't deny that using it has made me confident that post pregnancy I will have less excess weight to contend with. But we should all realize that dictating to others what they should do isn't realistic or helpful. While we are ent_tled to our opinions, we have to remember that people are individuals and will do what they want to based on their life circ_mstances. All we should be doing is sharing information not orders. Reality is I think it's a major adjustment for women to balance being a healthy and loving Mom while also maintaining your attractiveness to your husband and self confidence. Anyone who dismisses these concerns and shallow vanity can't relate to almost every new Mom I know.

I think Debra was not given the benefit of the doubt by a lot of the responders to her question. Isn't it possible that she had been taking diet pills before she found out that she was pregnant and was concerned about the effects? And if she was considering taking them, compa__sionate honesty goes a lot further than arrogant condemnation.

I was actually wondering the same myself. I was 130 lbs in May 2005, and now in my 3rd month of pregnancy, I am 177 lbs. I am so worried about my weight gain...and the doctors just chuckle. I have seen 2 doctors now, and they just say "you are not fat" but they don't undertand where I am comming from with this. None of my clothes fit me..even the bigger ones I had to buy. I am not even showing yet, and people think I am 6 months pregnant. It hurst when people say that, and it really does hurt when you ask a question about dieting during pregnancy and people jump all over you like they are "saints" of parenthood and pregnancy. I mean, going on a diet is eating healthier...so I don't know where the idea came that you should not diet when pregnant...I just want to know if taking a non ephedra appet_te supressant is safe or not during pregnancy? I am eating so many times a day because I am starving and its NOT because of the baby. A baby only consumes about 300 calories a day....if you reallly want to get technical..the more weight you gain, the more depressed you get...and what is a symptom of depression? Suicide...so tell me which is more dangerous? And then you say take meds to avoid the depression...well those meds have some pretty serious side effects for a baby---doc_mented...unlike diet pills...

I will never return to this site again. I felt like I was in high school, listening to gossip...yuk

What will happen to the baby if you do take the pills while pregnant? I know its not good for it but what will happen?

Well i know someone that took diet pills before she knew she was pregnant once she found out she was pregnant she stopped OF COURSE, i meanits only common sense and if youare concerned about weight gain just like i am considering I use to be size 1-2 and now pregnant that is what exewrcising is for half of those diet pills have enormus amounts of caffeine so i guess if you want a unhealthy baby meaning, collic, caffine strung, kinda like a mom who is an aclhy and drinks whiles she is pregnant then contiue to do it but honestly with me my weight has always been an issue b/c i use to be fat so when i lost all my weight from going to a gym 6 days a week and having a personal trainer i got use to being skinny and liking it, so like i said im concern about my weight too considering summer will be coming and ill be pregnant but theres nothing i can do about it but work out lightly and after the baby then if i want to take a supplement i will b/c i wont have asomeone else living inside me. Put it this way! When your child is born would you do anything to harm it or give it anything to harm, I think not so why do it in its stges of growth? Think

I'm in my late 30's my mom took diet pills while pregnant her top weight was 120 pounds! My sibling and I have learning disabilities and ADD also I now have a child that has ADD. I wonder to this day if that was what affected us.

Diet pills should be cla__sified in the same category as anything else that could ‘potentially’ be harmful to your baby. Just like fish high in mercury, soft cheeses, prescription drugs etc… diet pills are just as safe/unsafe as any of those. Having just found out you were pregnant and you’re worried about taking diet pills, then stop until you speak with your doctor. Same if you were smoking or drinking, you’d stop when you found out right? (hopefully) I’m not saying diet pills are bad for you, I’m not a doctor. However I have done my research and ‘some’ diet pills can contain a combination of caffeine and ephedrine that can potentially be deadly. We are told to limit caffeine intake while pregnant, and therefore that should be the same for something containing caffeine. Your doctor will let you know what’s safe or not. However, the OP had a simple question and basically was ripped apart as well as the posters following her. Many people were brought to this link from a search on the topic and apparently had the same concerns. Advice is all they seek and many were of no help at all to them.
