Heather - November 22

Just thought I would add this quote from the March of Dimes... More from the March of Dimes: "No level of alcohol use during pregnancy has been proven safe. The March of Dimes recommends that a pregnant woman does not drink any alcohol - including beer, wine, wine coolers and hard liquor - throughout her pregnancy and while nursing. "Drinking while pregnant can cause fetal alcohol syndrome, a lifelong condition that can include mental retardation, facial abnormalities, stunted growth, and learning disorders. It can also increase the risk of miscarriage, low birthweight, stillbirth and death in early infancy. When a pregnant woman drinks, alcohol pa__ses swiftly through the placenta to her fetus. In the unborn baby’s immature body, alcohol is broken down much more slowly than in an adult’s body. As a result, the alcohol level of the fetus’s blood can be even higher and can remain elevated longer than that of the mother’s blood."

And one more quote, pulled from the CDC website....4. Question - "Is beer or wine safer to drink than hard liquor?" Answer - No. One 12 ounce beer has about the same amount of alcohol as one 5 ounce gla__s of wine, or one 1.5 ounce shot of liquor.

stop already....

lol - November 23

Oh please.. I stop already.. I don't think anyone is not going to have a healthy baby by having ONE gla__s of wine with dinner every once in a while. I don't think anyone is saying every day, or even every week. Please.. move on.

to lol - November 23

you should re read some of these responses, one lady would have a drink everyday, and yes it might be harmful to your fetus, just one gla__s, so why not do what is in your power to have a healthy baby, thats all Im saying, and its not enough already, to many people take it for granted, the chance to have life in them, its a gift that should be cherished. You don't have to read this thread its just opinions here, you can move on if you want, others want the chance to say what they feel. See ya.

regarding : Praise to Heather - November 23

Thank You! I was starting to feel like an out numbered minority on this subject! Everyone told me to stop too, but that is what this forum is about, voicing your opinion. If you go against the majority you are told that you are rude and to stop already LOL! I am not going to stop if it means I may have a chance to help educate someone and help a baby out. It all comes down to what you are willing to sacrifice. Some people take chances, I would rather not. Many things are out of my control and when I look back on my pregnancy, I want to know I did everything I could to help my baby get a healthy start.

Is it safe to drink wine during the pregnancy

No -Read Pregnancy Section - November 25

http://www.afm.mb.ca/pdfs/FastFactsAlc2002.pdf Read the section of pregnancy. There was a study done on those who drank only one gla__s of wine per week.

Wake Up - November 25

Here are some facts, not fiction!! To the ladies who say they drank and their children are fine, it may not show up until later in life, please think before you drink, you are feeding your baby alcohol, why would you want to do that? If you drink when you are pregnant, your baby drinks too. Alcohol pa__ses right from your body to your baby's body. The alcohol can hurt your baby even before you feel its effects and it stays in your baby longer than in you. A baby's system cannot break down the alcohol. Alcohol can damage a growing baby's brain, organs and body. This damage can affect how your baby thinks, acts, looks and learns as a child and as an adult. The consumption of alcohol during pregnancy can lead to a variety of alcohol-related birth disorders in a baby. These defects can be severe or imperceptible. Individuals with FAS have a higher frequency of birth disorders than the general population. The disorder may involve craniofacial area, mouth (cleft, palate, crooked teeth, speech problems), skeleton, skin, heart, brain, spinal cord and kidneys. For example: Because their brain is damaged forever, they may have trouble following simple instructions or remembering things They are small and do not grow normally Their faces can look different, such as small eyes and thin lips They are often "colicky" babies and "hyper" children They might have trouble seeing, hearing or speaking They might have heart or kidney problems When they get older: They often have trouble controlling how they act and get along with other people They have trouble paying attention and learning at school They struggle with depression and may have drug and alcohol problems They have trouble holding jobs They often get into trouble with the law General symptoms: mental retardation small babies with low growth rates heart defects behaviour problems cleft palates smaller than normal skulls difficulty with abstract concepts (time, math or money) characteristic facial features

You know... - November 25

There are so many people out there like that who's parents did not have any wine during pregnancy. My mother never drank and I've always had poor grades (regardless of extra work and tutors, I still could not pa__s math and science) what could she have done wrong them to mess me up?

Facts - November 28

We are not saying that if you dont drink you will have a perfect baby, and ya there are exceptions to the rule that have healthy babies and they drank through the pregnancy, but its in your control not to drink, if there is the slightest chance that a drink will harm your baby why wouldnt you not do it? its 50/50, if you dont drink than you cant blame yourself if something does go wrong. Be healthy and happy!!!

Carly - November 30

I am 20 years old, married, and now 4 mothes pregnant with my first baby. I just want to say that my mom was very sick while pregnant with me. She had trouble eating, sleeping, etc. In the last few monthes of her pregnancy her doctor told her to drink 4 oz of wine before bed whenever she needs it. My mom drank 4 oz of red wine about 3 nights a week for probably 2 monthes...I have never head health problems...no defects...and no mental problems. Now this doesnt mean that I plan on drinking red wine 3 times a week in my pregnancy, but I am also not experiencing the sickness my mom did. So, dont worry, just enjoy being pregnant and if you get a craving once and a while, you have that gla__s of wine! :)
