Heartburn Is Driving Me Up The Wall

Honestly, I think I slept for about an hour last night due to heartburn. I take these heartburn mints (forgot the name in English, am living in Europe now) and I drink lots of milk, but at some point during the night nothing works anymore! I'm a bit reluctant to take medication because of the effects it may have on the baby. Anyone have this same problem? Wanna complain a bit too? Any tips?

YES, it is so painful. I used to take Milanta which did nothing. Now I take TUMS which is working. I still get it but I can finally sleep.

my heartburn got so bad that nothing over the counter helped. My doc prescribed Prevacid and it works like a charm. He a__sures me that is is absolutely safe for the baby. I take 1 pill every 2 days, and I haven't had heartburn since.

Eat a lot of papaya. every meal. there is a natural chemical in it that calms stomach acid.(what they based TUMS on)

NOT papaya - it has an enzyme that causes contractions that can send you into early labour. And NOT milk - milk does calm your stomach, but only for a little while, but then the burn and acid comes back even worse. This is a proven fact. Tums is okay - it is calcium carbonate and neutralizes acid. Other things to try are Gaviscon (Alginic Acid), propping yourself up on pillows or a wedge, and all those "lifestyle changes" you will find on the internet. In my compete desperation, I 've also tried apple cider vinegar, cayenne pepper, gelatin, apples, the list goes on. Nothing seems to help and I thiink the only cure is to give birth! If I were you, I'd stay away from the new drugs (prevacid, zantac, etc) since they are so brand new and untested on pregnant women - do you really want to be a guinea pig? Good luck.

My husband is spanish and he told me to eat lime. I was reluctant to try it because it is acidic and I thought it would just make it worse. Finally I gave in and it worked wonders for me!

believe it or not take a ice cube and chew it a little to where it is small enough for you to swallow and not choke and it should help i didn't think it would but that is my #! remedy and i'm 37 =2 weeks and nothing else works

I also find you reach a point in pregnancy where nothing will work...It is simply the baby pressing on places and making it worse and then yes the only cure is a baby being born!!! At night I have enough pillows stacked behind me that I fall asleep sitting up - doesn't put it away but it at least becomed more bearable! At some point through the night I waken and find I can toss most of them on the floor and sleep a bit better...The only downside is a husband being suffocated!! The things you choose to live with!! Haha!

Thanks for your good tips and ideas! Gaviscon, I've read and noticed myself, doesn't work anymore after a while. In fact, if used for prolonged periods of time it actually makes the heartburn worse. So, I've stopped using that. I'm sticking to Tums-type mints that seem to help a bit. I still drink lots of milk and got this drink called "Antagel", which is really a liquid Tums. Oh, I've also got a much, much higher pillow. That really seems to work.
I will definitely try the icecube and maybe the lime, but I'm reluctant too! Won't hurt to try, right?
Really, I agree that the ultimate solution is to get this child born! I still have at least 6 weeks to go, though. I hope to goodness this doesn't get to the point where nothing helps anymore like you said iemc19! If it gets that bad I will be eating a lot of papaya and not just for the heartburn either :-)

Tums works for me and my doc said that up to 150 mg of Zantac a day is ok too. I have done a little looking and the reason that the lime may work is that for some ppl heartburn is caused by NOT having Enough acid in your stomache. Wierd but you could try lime or lemon or even vinegar if you can stomach it plain
