Is Feeling Constipated During Contractions Normal

I was up with contractions for 3 hours last week (today I am 1 week overdue). I kept feeling like I had to use the restroom, both ways. But the worse was I felt like I was constipated. I sent my hubby to Wal-Mart at 3am to get Milk-of-Magnesium to help and of course it did nothing, I wasn't really consitpated. What is this feeling and is it normal? Is it the pressure from the babies head? Baby is head down, +1 station, 3cm dialated, cervix anterior and soft...ready to go as of 7 days ago.
