When I am not pregnant, I suffer from migraines on a daily basis and I take Imitrex for them. Now that I am pregnant, I am getting the same amount of migraines, but I cant take the Imitrex (I am 10 1/2 weeks pregnant). My doctor has given my Vicodin to take and says that it is ok to take regularly ( I was skeptical and so I double checked with a second OB and my neurologist). They all say that the worst case scenario is that my baby will have to be weened off of the drug after he/she is born, but that it will cause no harm (I'm still not happy about that scenario, trust me). Apparently there are many women who must take narcotic pain killers for different conditions. The thought is that it is worse to put the baby under that much stress from pain. Anyway, I went back to my neurologist and she said that there may be some new info. that Imitrex is ok after the first trimester??? Anyone heard of this? Also, she said that there might be some preventative medications that we could consider after the first trimester. I am scared. Anyone had to go this route because of extreme migraines??

I had really bad migraines during my last pregnancy. My doc said that he couldn't prescribe Imitrex because it worked by constricting blood vessles, which meant that it would also constrict the blood vessels in the placenta. I took vicodin and another med-i can't remember the name-but it had tylenol, caffeine and a barbituate. My migraines were not daily, more like one a week that lasted for two days. Does caffeine help you at all?

Yes, caffeine can sometimes make it better. I checked with my OB this week about the Imitrex and he said the same thing as you. THe doctor also suggested Midrin..is this the one you took?

I remember it now, it was fioricet. It made me really out of it. I had better luck with the vicodin. I'm taking feverfew (an herb) for my migraines now...it can't be used during pregnancy, but you might try it afterwards...it seems to be helping me.
