Why do pelvic exams hurt me so much? I don't tense up, they just seem to hurt.
They don't bother most people =(

I've found that it really depends on who does the exam. I've had some that really hurt, and some that didn't hurt at all. The one I had during my first pregnancy hurt so much I was bowlegged for a couple of days, but the one I had for this pregnancy didn't hurt at all.

You must be scared or something. Do you feel comfortable with your doctor...if not find another one. You will be having a lot of pelvic exams when your pregnant, and of course your legs will be wide open when your baby comes. I have to admit my very first pap hurted because the doctor was ruff...I guess it all depends on the doctor you have.

Does your doctor use a speculum? ( they metal thing they place in your v____a to open it up) If yes, those come in all different sizes, and you could ask him to use a smaller one.

I changed from male Dr. to Female and ALWAYS tell them to use a small speculum, "duck bill" exam instrument. It has made a huge difference! Plus, I make sure to tell them to go slow because it freaks me out. And you have to try and concentrate on something other than what they are doing. Like focus on a picture on the wall. Hope this helps. Male Dr.s don't know how it feels so I will not let them touch me anymore. Seems it doesn't hurt me anymore now.

My experience was the opposite as Shel's. I had a female gyno and she had really long finger nails, so that really hurt! I've only seen men since then, and they've been better. I don't know why, but I just feel more comfortable with males, also.

I have had nothing but bad experiences with pelvic exams. I am very tiny so even though they are using the smallest speculum, it is still too big for me. I know it is very easy to say, and I still can't do it, but trying to relax would be the best thing. The more you tense up, the tighter your muscles contract, making it more uncomfortable. Good luck!

i have the same problem. you may just have a small cannal like me. it took my doctor forever to find my cervix the first time. i always clench my hands together to put all the tension their and try to relax my muscles completely. try to focus on something totally different. i think if their was anything wrong the doctor would have found it doing the exam, but you shoul stil let doc know. maybe he/she will be a liitle more gentle
