Recurring Infection

I just received a call from my doctor's office telling me that I have blood in my urine sample from my appointment on Monday. At my last 3 appointments I have had positive tests for bladder infections and have had one bacterial infection. I am currently 17 weeks pregnant. Has anyone else had this problem? The nurse said that it was nothing to worry about and that it was more common during pregnancy, but I am concerned. I have had bladder infections in the past, but not recurring like this, and I have not had a bacterial infection before either. Any suggestions and feedback would be greatly appreciated.

I have always suffered recurring... ever since I was a kid. I did lose my first pregnancy because of one becoming a kidney infection (don't worry... you're already seeing a Dr... mine was my own fault for no realizing I was preg. and letting it go for too long). I was on antibiotics everyday through my first pregnancy to stop bladder infections from starting (that's how I found out I was expecting again... I got a bladder infection before I even had a BFP!) I also had three different bacterial infections while pregnant... Ugg! Make sure you eat yogurt with live and active cultures in it, because the antibiotics can cause yeast infections (an added misery for a pregnant woman!). Be tested for Strep before you deliver and talk to your Dr. about being treated for it even if the test is negative. Recurrent infections put you at a higher risk for this and it's better to be safe than sorry. It's no bother for the Dr. to do... they simply inject the antibiotic into your IV line while you're in early labor. The good result for me?... (other than my daughter, that is!) Apparently, all the stretching from my growing uterus shifted and stretched things enough that I have never suffered through another bladder infection since I delivered (11 years and 7 pregnancies ago!) There may yet be a "light at the end of the tunnel" for you. Best of luck to you and your bundle of joy!

Hi Kris, I started having trouble with urgency/frequency early in my pregnancy, but actually didn't have any infections. I have posted about this on this site a few times, and someone told me that you can develop an irritable bladder, which if the lining gets irritated, you will be more susceptible to infection. I take chewable acidophilus (good bacteria) to fight any infections that might try to start on my irritated bladder lining, and so far so good, I am at 32 weeks, and still no infections, though my bladder still gets pretty irritated at times. I also watch out I don't eat foods that irritate the bladder like chocolate, or foods high in acid like citrus foods. I also take an herbal pill (marshmallow root) which is safe to take during pregnancy. It helps with the urinary tract and is supposed to soothe the mucous membranes. Not sure if any of this will help you, but I thought I'd let you know what I have been trying. Best of luck, let me know how you're doing!

Thanks for the advice ladies. I really appreciate it. : ) I'm back on antibiotics, but Chrissy I am going to try your suggestions most definitely. Thanks again!

I have heard that if you get one infection during pregnancy you will most likely get more. I can remember with my son I was told two different times that I had a UTI and I actually had no clue! One time was when I went to the hospital to deliver him! Anyway, before I had babies I used to get alot, and I started taking cranberry pills. They work awesome!
