Antidepressants During Pregnancy

I suggestthat you continue the good work! If you got off it, stay off it. You could slow the babys breathing.

This is a very personal decision to make. I took anti-depressants for 11 years before coming off of them so we could try to get pregnant. I am now 7 weeks pregnant and doing great. I have been off my meds for about 8 months and am coping great. I seen a psycologist for the first time in my life as I was coming off my meds and that did wonders for me. I haven't felt this good in a long time. As for taking meds and being pregnant you need to weigh the risks. If it is possible to not take them, then for sure that would be best for the baby. But if your health is going to be poor without them, that doesn't help the baby. I would recommend a good therapist who you can really trust and build a good relationship with. Also if you are set against not taking meds during pregnancy, make sure you come off of them at least a few months before you start trying to conceive. That way you will have somewhat of an idea if you are going to be able to cope without them. Good luck, and know that there are alot of people in the same boat as you.

Hi flgirl. I understand exactly what you are saying about not feeling like your old self and not being very happy during this early part of your pregnancy. I experienced depression for the first time when I was only 6 weeks pregnant (with my fourth child). I did not recognise what I was going thru until my husband (a psych nurse) told me that he thought I was clinically depressed. I rejected this until things snowballed so greatly that I could not get out of bed even to care for my other children. I eventually sought professional help and was put onto antidepressants (Zoloft) when I was about 11 weeks pregnant. After feeling so guilty about taking any medication during pregnancy I came to realise how worse off I, my family and the unborn baby would be if things continued the way they were. I rejected the pregnancy from about 6-14 weeks, but now at 26 weeks, I am thrilled about being pregnant and feel really good emotionally. My psychiatrist rea__sured me (along with research that my husband and I done) that the medication was fine to take during pregnancy although the baby could possible experience some minor withdrawal symptoms at birth such as jitters. Also, another thing to consider is if you suffer depression during pregnancy, you are very likely to suffer postnatally as well, which could prove detrimental to you and your baby. So I urge you to seek medical advice and to NOT be ashamed of how you are feeling. Go with it, seek help and enjoy your pregnancy and baby. Afterall, your body is going thru so many changes BEYOND your control and sometimes we just need a little help to get by. I don't know where I would be if I didn't overcome my shame and anxiety at being on antidepressants during pregnancy. I now realise there is NOTHING to be ashamed about. Best wishes with your pregnancy and pending birth.

i suffer from mild manic depression. i had to be taken off all my meds at 5 weeks of pregnancy. i'm due next week and i have been fine for the last 9 months. my psychiatrist had told me before i got pregnant that my hormones could just kick in and balance me out. they sure did. i haven't had any complications. i feel so good right now. we discussed placing myself back on my meds after the baby is born. i totally agree with that, b/c i really hate the episodes of mania and with a new baby and lack of sleep, i don't want to trigger anything. good luck to you!

I have been taking low dose only 25mg of Zoloft for 5 years. I tried to come off a few months before pregnant but relapsed into anxiety/depression. One doctor told me to stay off when pregnant not even accessing my history and I felt like she fobbed me off. I got 2nd and 3rd opinions and was told it was completely safe and many people take them without any problems. After birth the baby may cry and get jittery with withdrawal but dont babies do this anyway when they are exposed to life outside the womb. I feel really balanced and well and glad I decided to stay on them for the health of myself and my baby. My advice is to make sure you have a really good doctor you trust and has very good knowledge with antidepressants and pregnancy and also knows your medical history well.

Hi I am 6wks and 4 days pregnant. I have been taking Effexor XR for anxiety for over 2 years. A week ago my doctor changed me to Wellbutrin SR because it is a cla__s B drug where effexor is a cla__s C drug. I have been having some withdrawal symptoms due to the fact he didnt wean me off the effexor xr. I have been experiencing a lot of vertigo. The withdrawals can last bout 2 weeks. Another good thing about wellbutrin SR is that it is used to quit smoking. I have been on it for a week and 1 day now. I do not have the cravings for cigarettes. When I think I want one i light it and it just doesnt taste very well. So not only am I treating my anxiety with a safer medicine for the baby but I am also quitting smoking which was very important to me. I have 2 other children and never smoked with them.

I took Zoloft throughout my 2nd pregnancy with no complications and my baby born by cesarian did not have any withdrawal symptoms. I am now in my 7th week of my 3rd pregnancy and am still on 100mg a day and am confident in taking it through this pregnancy too. I b___stfeed my second til he was 14mts with no problems so be a__sured, you are better on it than off, especially if you feel any symptoms of anxiety or depression.

i just came off of effexor to become pregnant and oh my gosh. i have been a wreck for 2 weeks. my NP put me on wellbutrin and i haven't noticed any benefit yet especially with the anxiety. he also started me on buspar today and told me to give it two weeks, but you know that anxiety and 2 weeks means a lifetime. anyway ask about those two, they are category b and are allegedly safe during pregnancy
