I am 23 weeks and was just told that I have a low lying placenta. Does anyone know exactly what this means and if it will cause any problems futher down the line.

I would like to know to, as I have the same thing.

At my 20 week ultrasound they said I had a low lying placenta. I came back for another one at 24 weeks and it had moved up. In most cases it will move and your doctor should do another ultrasound. Unless your placenta ends up covering your cervix there is really no problem. If it does cover your cervis, you are in for a c-section.

I also have a low lying placenta and my doctor said there is no need for another ultrasound because in most cases the placenta moves up. I the case where the placenta covers the cervix this would cause bleeding and discomfort and an incompetent cervix causing early labor. Yes a c- section would be done.

I was also told at my level 2 u/s at 20 weeks that the placenta was too close to the cervix. This was done at another facility than my dr's office. They wanted me to have another level 2 u/s at 28 weeks (last week). I'm 38 and this is my first pregnancy. The doctor's office said they didn't think another u/s was necessary, because this condition usually corrects itself. Mine did, and yours probably will, too. Good luck.

I have that too. My OB explained that it is not a problem in 2 trimester, sinse uterus grows up from the bottom. The placenta moves up together with your uterus as it grows. (hopefully). They make another scan at 32 weeks to check on the location of placenta. If it covers the cervix, then it obstructs the delivery and can cause the bleeding and hemorrage, so the c-section has to be done. I've read numerous articles about it online already and they all say the same.

I was told on my last visit a couple days ago (22 wks) that I have this low lined/lying placenta. I was very worried but the doctor a__sured me that it's nothing to panic about. As the pregnancy goes along, and the uterus expands, etc. the placenta moves it's way upwards and away from the cervix. It doesn't harm you or the baby. Try not to worry too much!!
