Marijuana And Pregnancy

Thank you Rachel!! Everything you said was absolutely my feelings too. So many people out there want you to believe that MJ is this terrible substance that will ruin your life, that is so not the case. It isn't any more dangerous than alcohol, less dangerous in fact. If women are concerned with smoking during pregnancy than just stop smoking. It is better to be safe than sorry. Just asking the question implies that you know you shouldn't be doing it. Quitting for your baby is the best gift you can give them, does this mean you can't ever do it again, absolutely not. Nine months is not a long time and look at the great reward you get at the end.

Personally I suffer from hyperemesis while I am pregnant, it sucks. If marijuana would help me be able to drink water, I'd do it, and yes I would be worried about the child's brain and feel guilty. But I already feel guilty I am not eating enough food, I've lost 25 lbs. Apparently they ARE prescribing it to women that have what I have really bad, but I don't live in a medical marijuana state. So I guess it isn't too bad. But if I were you and wanted to keep my child, make sure you stop in enough time to clean out you system. You don't want CPS to get involved!

During my university studies to become a teacher, I learned a lot about fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) and fetal alcohol effects (FAE). In my cla__ses, the topic of the effects of drugs on the developing fetus came up, and I have done some of my own research on the topic. There is very little scholarly research on the effects of marijuana on an unborn child. Most lab studies on marijuana do not actually use marijuana itself, but a similar compound, and these studies don't involve pregnant women (for obvious reasons--consider the ethics of involving pregnant women in lab studies on THC!). So, there really is no definitive medical evidence that marijuana is safe or unsafe. Personally, I subscribe to the precautionary principle when it comes to putting anything in my body while pregnant--if I don't know whether or not it's safe, I err on the side of caution and avoid it. Anecdotally, I know of women who smoked weed throughout their pregnancies, and have healthy children with no developmental or cognitive problems. From reading these posts, it is clearly also possible to find anecdotal evidence that mj is harmful. This is why scientists don't rely on anecdotal evidence to draw their conclusions! The best advice I can give is to avoid anything you're uncertain about. I'd rather give something up unnecessarily than risk harming my child.

You know most of you people are being quite harsh regarding this topic. When you have read things that say smoking marijuana causes low birth weight and learning disabilities it is based on opinion and they are saying that it is a possibility NOT that it will happen. (because they don;t know) Obviously doctors and health professionals will not encourage a person to smoke or do any kind of drugs while they are pregnant but as far as smoking Marijuana goes they do not have any evidence....ANY proof that it does anything. Alot of people have done this throughout their pregnancies and had beautiful healthy smart children. Sometimes bad things just happen , that's just the way it is, but I do not agree with using a scare tactic on these women when nobody has any proof to back up what they are saying. I hope this can comfort some of the ladies on here that have been misinformed.

Whilst I agree that it would probably been wiser to investigate the question sooner, holier than thou att_tudes are unhelpful. Live consciously. Research, investigate and ask questions from everyone who has information. Not just on this question, but every important issue in your life. Be critical of what you find. Who says? What interests do they represent? What support do they have in the literature? I am not sure why you chose to smoke during pregnancy...perhaps you were unable to give up? The context is also important. Obviously, the more healthy your lifestyle, the better for your child, however, Iwonder if the many critical respondants,,,a) have children themselves and b) gave up stress, caffeine, alcohol, soft cheese, dangerous situations, driving etc etc....all of which are known to endanger embryo's in some contexts AND c) whether being so hysterical and judgemental is likely to impact on the wellbeing of their own children. No one is perfect. Live consciously.

Pam.... what research have you done to know that there is no proof it's harmful? I'm sure they've done studies on the effects of marijuana.. they don't post all that c___p in doctor's offices for the heck of it. Again.. as I've said before... marijuana contains MORE of the cancer-causing carcinogen benzopyrine than cigarettes do. PLUS, usually when people smoke marijuana, they hold the smoke in longer than they would a cig, which obviously gives more exposure to the carcinogen. I don't think there's anyone here that would say cigs aren't harmful, so if marijuana has MORE of the harmful substance than cigs do... what makes you think that marijuana isn't harmful?

Pam - July 7

April, try and do research on this .... Most of anything you will find is message boards similar to this one because there is no evidence to post anything but people's opinions. And as far as the difference between smoking marijuana and cigarettes would be that they DO have evidence that smoking cigarettes causes low birth weight and so on. If they had the evidence they would be saying the same thing about marijuana which they aren't because still to this day they have nothing to prove that. Anyways I think my point is that everybody has their different opinion which is same for all different topics. I just don't think it's fair to bash people for trying to educate themselves on certain issues. Not that you are I just mean in general.

Pam... please re-read my post and think about it a minute. Does it sound like I haven't done any research? haha. Anyway, I agree with you that nobody should come on here bashing ANYONE for asking a simple question. They should just give a mature answer and be done with it. I do think it's a little nieve, though, to think that no research has been done on the effects of marijuana. Even if it isn't with an unborn fetus, if it's harmful to you when you AREN'T pregnant, it's certainly not good when you are. Why take a chance? Do you see my point?

Ok I have my own opinion. My best friend smoked weed whenever she was pregnant. Not alot. But it is a proven fact, if you have bad nausea, weed will ease it enough for you to eat. Now I'm not talking about smoking a blunt or anything. I'm talking a bowl, no more than a couple hits. It will stop your nausea and let you eat, instead of eating and throwing back up. Weed also stops cramps. I am 14 weeks prego, and I smoked weed 1 time, 3 hits, to stop my nausea. And i could actually eat! So I suggest only some it if you're hurting or can't eat. (MUCNCHIES PEOPLE!!) And don't smoke that much.

Raychel - July 7

And oh yea, by friend had a perfect 8lb 4 oz baby boy, and he didn't even have jaundice! If you throwing up your food and can't eat, well neither can your baby. Like I said, don't smoke to get stoned. I smoked that one time so I can eat. But to heavy pot users, cut back. Once a week, and only if you're sick or hurting. Other than that, if you're just doing it to get a buzz, thats wrong.

I personally think that smoking weed while you are pregnant calms the baby. I have 2 children and I didn't smoke with the first one and he is wild and the 2nd one I did a little bit and he is calm and goes to bed good and is so happy. I am not saying it is ok too smoke while you are pregnant I am just saying I dont think it harms the baby in any way. Think about it you smoke weed and you get the munchies, so therefore you are getting enough food. And another thing you get calm yourself so your baby is calm.

ca__sie u r such a dumba__s. please stop having kids.

RE: CASSIE....FR:Pam - July 9

Not you Ca__sie but whoever wrote that you're a dumb a__s is a dumb a__s themselves. People are completly overreacting about this. What other people think is only their OPINION because they have no facts to back it up. Therefore who says you're wrong and they are right? This is suposse to be a website where people can express their opinion, not to be called names; alot of people have different opinions. And not to mention I had my son when I was 18 and I smoked it because I was so naseous all the time and nothing else seemed to help, and my son is now 4 yrs old and a very intelligent little boy. It didn't have any adverse affect on him, but I'm sure people will say that was just a MIRACLE that nothing happened right!?

??? - July 9

How about smoking cigs? If there have been no significant studies performed on marijuana and the effects and you can smoke pot while preg what about smoking cigs. Isn't that the same thing?

Stef - July 9

It is so hard to not judge...but I am trying. Failing....but trying! I guess I just don't understand. WHY???????????????????????????Why would you be so selfish? If you want to be a pot head...fine. But to do it to your unborn baby? Come on. Get serious. Yor baby may be fine...or may not...perhaps this was a question to ask MONTHS ago. Like I mentioned to a person asking about alcohol..... It takes like over 800 things to go right to have a healthy baby...and just 1 thing to go wrong to have a miscarriage or birth defects. Why not stack the odds in your favor? Is it really that hard to understand? TIP: When you are pregnant....STOP DRINKING AND USING DRUGS.

April - July 9

Pam will you stop saying there are no facts it's harmful? IT IS A FACT that marijuana contains MORE BENZOPYRINE, which CAUSES CANCER, than cigarettes do!! IF CIGS ARE HARMFUL... SO IS MARIJUANA. PERIOD.
