I'm 27 weeks pregnant with my first child. I experienced a panic attack about 4 weeks ago. It was preceded by a few days of insomnia and stress. Afterwards, I literally felt like I would lose my mind if this continued. I started seeing a therapist. She recommended reading The Anxiety and Phobia Workbook by Edmund Bourne. It has great advice on dealing with panic attacks. I still don't feel like I'm "out of the woods", but do feel like I have some control back. I am not on any drugs because I will try exercise, relaxation and mediation first.

Hey Ladies, I am now 9 weeks pregnant and just found out that it's twins. I've been having panic for a couple of years now and was on meds for it a couple years ago. Yesterday I started going to a therapist that deals only with Panic disorder and she was wonderful. She also has me doing a workbook, with breathing and relaxation exercises. Then she has me going through this program called CHAANGE. I heard good things so some of you might want to google it. She's suffered from panic for 20 years and has worked through it without meds and now she helps other people. She was wonderful. Question though, does anyone feel like they can't breath all the time? Like maybe they aren't getting enough air? I've never had this happen but it just started yesterday and I'm not sure it has to do with the panic.

Sarah (july 5 post)-I've heard that sometimes pregnancy can make the panic attacks go into remission. There is medication available that you can take while pregnant. You will have to check with your doctor. Also, I started to see a psychologist for help with my panic/anxiety disorder. She suggested the Anxiety and Phobia Workbook by Edmund Bourne. It really helps me. I still can feel anxious about the health of the baby, but I do some deep abdominal breathing to help keep the physical symptoms away. I do have thoughts racing through my mind, but I've been able to control the physical signs of anxiety. By the way, I've been diagnosed with Generalized Anxiety Disorder with Panic.

Maria, Thanks for the info! I am just so afraid of taking med. I always think it will harm the baby... I have a guilty feeling about the meds. I have tried Lucinda Basettes book and tapes. That helps too! I am just afraid that once I am pregnant and I have a panic attack and I restrain myself from taking pills what will happen then... because now when I feel it coming on. I pop a pill ativan..

Girls, Girls, Girls,
Calm down, relax, and kick back. Your not going crazy, your babys are fine, and there is absolutly hope. It's called Lexaro and is prescribed to us pregnant folks. It works wonders by upbringing the seratonin levels in the brain. Its used to treat (GAD) general anxiety disorder and depression. The two problems go hand in hand together. I had my first panic attack about 10 years ago. They would come about once a year. These periods of anxiety were horrible and did not just go away. They would last days at a time. I thought I was going nuts. It took 10 years for me to finally realize what my problem was and how to deal with it. I am now 35 weeks pregnant with my second child and currently taking Lexapro. I call it the wonder drug. LOL Anyway, about 28 weeks into my pregnancy I was hospitalized for (sinus tachycardia) fast rapid heart rate. I was taching about 140 beats per min. Well at the time I was'nt actually having a panic episode I just felt real bad and tired. I stayed in the hospital for a whole week while they ran all kinds of cardio test. The prognosis was just physilogical. Dr. insisted my heart was fine. The rapid heart rate was coming from stress, anxiety and the increase of blood volume and fluids for baby. Well as the days and weeks went by I became obsessed with my heart rate beating so fast until I was in a constant, constant, state of panic and suffered terrible anxiety. I finally told my Dr. about the problems from the past. He then prescribed Lexapro. The first week made me feel tired and sickly on the stomach. Second week the feelings went away. Took about 4 weeks to get fully in my system. I feel like a brand new person now. I'm no longer on the edge, I don't feel anxious, and my heart rate went down. At one point I would find myself screaming to the top of my lungs at my 10 year old when she did rebellous things instead of talking. I was nuts. So good luck to all out there I hope I have helped in some way. I do know that talking about this issue with others helps alot. You feel like your not the only nut out there. (LOL) Oh, if there is anyone who has suffered from sinus tachycardia please let me know.

I am 32 weeks pregnant and have suffered panic attacks for the past 10 years. I was diagnosed with an underactive thyroid and was slightly anaemic. Since I've been treated, I haven't had any panic attacks and feel much better. I also know of another 2 women who have experienced the same thing. A simple test will rule these things out. Ask your doctor because they often won't suggest the test themselves.

hey, i just read your story. i am currently 11 weeks prego with my third child. i have suffered from this aweful disorder for 6 years. i didn't have it for my first child. for my second i did. it was really bad. i had suicide thoughts, and i felt like i was going to die 3 to 4 times a day. i finally got some help. i went to a psychiatrist. it really did help, until my son was 1. then agitation started and feeling faint everyday. panic started again. when my son was born, he was healthy. he weighed 9.5 lbs. i was on meds while pregnant. i was on celexa. they had started me on a few meds, until they seen that this one helped. but believe me, it was a bad pregnancy. now i'm prego again, and i feel it again. nothing makes me happy, and i feel like i am going to die everyday. i won't see the psychiatrist again until aug. 1. i can't wait. i never thought pregnancy would be like this. i feel useless. can some one advice me? thanks.
