this may sound dumb, but is it ok for my 4 week old to sleep through the night without her nighttime feeding. we put her to bed about 9pm and she has been sleeping for the past week until 4, 5 and today 6am. she eats pretty good during the day and her feedings then are about every 3 to 4 hours and she eats 3 ounces at every feeding. she isn't fussy when she gets up in the am. i'm just wondering if that's ok to leave her sleeping that long w/o a feeding? what do you think?

I think it is ok, I think that the cut off for waking them up to eat is 3 weeks, but i am not positive, you should consult your doctor.

My pediatrician recommended not letting baby sleep more than 6 hours until we saw a good pattern of weight gain and was at least 12lbs.

You are so lucky! Don't wake her up!!!! Count your blessings. If she is hungry she will let you know, trust me.

you are super lucky girl!! my 4 week old gets up several times at night. i'd say it's ok as long as she eats real well before bed and upon rising. they need their meals but other then that...you go girl, and congrats:)

I agree, I have heard that you should never wake a sleeping baby.

My daughter did the same thing- no way was I going to wake her up!!! She is now 3.5 months and sleeps between 11-12 hours a night!! Her weight gain and height are normal, so I am counting my blessings. My doctor told me that as long as her growth was on track, no need to worry.

Wow, you are so lucky, I hope my baby starts sleeping through the night that early when he/she is born. As long as she is gaining enough weight, it is fine.

oops, I also meant to say, all babies have different sleep/wake/feed patterns, she has obviously settles into a very convenient routine.

It depends on how well she is gaining weight. Nine hours without food is a long time for a 1 month old. I would feel uneasy about that if it is happening every day. Have you asked your baby's doctor?

I think once they regain their birth weight and are consistantly gaining weight they are fine to sleep through the night. I kept a log of how many feedings my son had just to make sure he was getting enough feedings during the day. My son slept 6 hours one night when he was only a few days old and I mentioned it to his doctor. She told me I needed to wake him up at 4 hours because he hadn't gained his birth weight back yet. I didn't set my alarm because I was so used to him waking me every 2-3 hours. My son started sleeping through the night at 5-6 weeks and is in the 95% for height and weight. He is now 4 months and is doing great. He now sleeps from 8:30 pm till 6 am. It's wonderful!

My daughter went though that as well, can't remember exactly when but I remember she was very young. Anyhow, her dr. said never wake up a baby at night, only if they're sleeping over 5/6 hrs during the day you can wake them. At night you should let them sleep. Babies know when they are hungry and will wake for their feeding. (only if you're baby is gaining weight). Also, your baby may very well be going through a growth spurt. Babies tend to eat more at each feeding and sleep more during growth spurts.
