Ferber Method Misunderstood

You know what is good for your child's lungs? Breathing. Not trying to be sarcastic but breathing helps a lot.

Different things work for different babies. You may actually never need to use this method. My son loved his crib and loved going to bed and never cried. We always had a really good bed time routine so to speak. He had he last bottle and then I rocked him for a little while until I knew he was pretty tired and then turned on music in his room and one of those aquariums that attach to the crib. I never had a hard time putting him down for naps or nightime. Making going to bed a positive experience and making sure you have a routine helps. My 3 year old still likes bed time we read books, he still listens to music every night and we never have crying. My 4 week old is still having trouble even wanting to lay down so we will see how it goes with this one.

Julie, I agree with you. My son is only 3 weeks old and goes to sleep after a feeding. I may rock him for a few minutes but he usually doesn't need it. He'll sleep anywhere, too, either in his ba__sinet or his crib. With Ferber, though, they stress just putting the baby down with no aids like rocking so that they don't get used to that and want to be rocked every night. They recommend doing a consistent activity like reading a story or playing music, like you do, and then leaving the room to teach the baby to put themselves to sleep. I am still a long ways from trying this one myself but know many who have done this successfully over the past year. Good luck with your newborn!
