I have been cleaning my 1 month old son's tongue and gums with a wet soft wash cloth. Does anyone know if there is a gum cleanser for infants less than 3 months old? Most of the ones I have found (eg. Gerber) are used for infants 3 months onwards.

I havent found one for under 3 months but what your doing with the wash cloth is fine. My Dr told me that it really wasnt even needed until they are 3+ months unless they already have teeth appearing close to the surface but its a good idea to do it from the get go to get the baby used to it by the time you are using a cleanser.

I am a dental hygienist. I tell all of my patients it is good idea to rinse babies gums with a wash cloth from the time thy are born. It gets them used to something in thier mouth, and they won't resist so much when you introduce other cleaning devices, and eventually a toothbrush. The wash cloth technique is more than effective!!

Sometimes when you buy baby orajel toothpaste it comes with a soft brush that fits over your finger. You could use that instead of a washcloth, because the soft bristles might clean better, and save the baby toothpaste until your son is old enough for it.

My sister-in-law in Singapore said they were already using some gum paste provided by their pediatrician for infant even below 3 months. Looks like I can't get one in the US. I just feel better if his tongue and gums are cleaned once a day. It's icky to see the tongue white. My son seems to enjoy getting his mouth clean.
