All the experts say no solids for the first few months and don't recommend until they are 4 months. But what if you have a very hungry baby? My son is 6 wks. and already 12 lbs. and eating approx. 34 oz. in a 24 period. With my first I waited until he was almost 3 months but he wasn't as big or as hungry?

You don't want to get me started on the "experts" that can never make up their minds and change all the rules every few years so people can argue about it on places like this forum. Anyway. I think if your baby is ready, and you are using your best judgements, and talk it over with your doctor, do it when you feel your child is ready. I know the guidelines are there for a reason, but I think waiting til 6 months is ridiculous for any solids. A lot of babies do fine on solids from 2-3 months. My cousin fed her kids cereal each at two weeks and they are fine. My son has gotten cereal in his bottle since 5 weeks for reflux, and is 3 months now and getting other foods. I have already started him on sweet potatoes, carrots, and pears. He is doing great. I say do it when your child exhibits signs of being ready and if you and possibly doc are comfortable with it. Every baby is different.

Im not saying that every kid isnt different and that the experts are always right but, i would look up information about feeding kids to early. Ive heard of a few cases where they fed their kids to early and they shouldnt of. However I dont really know your case, maybe you should ask your own pediatrician he should know more about your son individualy and should be able to give you a better answer. hope this helps:)

erica is absolutely right, I don't think anyone should just totally disregard theiry doc and their informed opinions. You should totally discuss with a doc. There are reasons for them saying when to give what. I just think sometimes they don't even know what they are talking aobutLOL! I have had 4 different doctors tell me 4 different things in regards to feeding solids. Only one of them went with the 6 month rule. And my son had cereal due to reflux, but I would have given it to him at 2 months because that is what I feel was right. I am not saying it is right for everyone. We mommies do know deep down what is best for our individual kids.

It's not only the experts but traditionally babies were never introduced to solids till they had teeth. Having a hungry baby is normal at this age, but introducing solids now *could* cause problems later. Most babies don't have problems regardless, but you will be taking a chance on his future health.

My doctor is very conservative and recommends waiting until 4 months.

My son is also a hungry baby so I started feeding him cereal at about 2 months. You have to do what is best for your child , a mothers instinct is far more accurate then a doctor because not all babies are the same. If formula is not satisifying him then you must do what needs to be done. I think you should atleast try him on cereal and see how he reacts , if he's not digesting it well and his bowel movements arn't as regular then maybe it is best to wait a little longer.

I don't get why in america/canada u guys start so early when for years anyway it was 4 months. They say now to start at 6 mths, i started at 5 and a half. Its because of obesity j, like my daughter is 14 pounds now and that was her weight at 5 mths and to me she was a big balloon. Your 6 week old is 12 pounds. Its a case of the bigger the baby the more they want to eat and starting way too early you will end up with a huge balloon. Also liz how can a mothers instincts be more accurate than a doctor, if a dr says they aren't ready they certainly aren't making it up. They are telling you because it can be harmful. I have mentioned the tongue mechanism they have of poking their tongue out uncontrollably, this motion needs to stop first before introducing solids but again each to their own but i certainly wouldn't be starting at 6 weeks of age. It amazes me that drs over there actually okay it to begin solids under 4 months or do you guys just do what you want to do and not listen to the drs? Remember each to their own and i dont wanna be slammed because i listened to my health nurse and disagree with starting cereal at 6 weeks of age.

The earlier you introduce your baby to solid foods the more susceptible they will be to diabetes, obesity, and cavities. My pediatrician said to b___stfeed exclusively for 6 months and then to introduce solids...cereal, veggies, fruit, then combinations...no meat until 9 months...

I don't want to start a fight, but I tend to agree with Toya... I don't want to put my son at risk for juvenile diabetes or anything else that can come from starting solids too early... A baby's digestion isn't set up to handle solids that early... Like I say, not trying to start anything, just voicing my opinion.

My boys were both very big babies. My son is now 3 and weighs 34 lb.s he slowed down after his first birthday. My 3 year old was also an eater and big baby I didn't start him on solids until 4 months. At 3 mths. I did give him a little cereal though. He is so healthy and not overweight. I am not thinking of starting now I was just curious because I have read on this board that some women give it really early. My doctor doesn't recommend until 4 months.
