Reaction To Shots

Question/query...Renity got her 4 month immunizations Friday morning. Friday afternoon, she was quiet and subdued...didn't cry, but wasn't too active. Yesterday, she was pretty much normal; this morning, she was normal. Then, around noon, she started having fits...she'd be fine for a few minutes, then start to scream as though she were in pain, then quiet down again...she wouldn't even nurse. I had to give her Tylenol to quiet her down so that she would nurse; she fell asleep nursing, and I had the opportunity to look at her chunky little thighs...the sites of the injections are visibly swollen; there are hard little knots under the skin where the needle stuck her, and there are red outlines where the Band-Aids were. Could she be having a delayed reaction to the shots, and could the red outlines indicate an allergic reaction to the Band-Aids?

Gabriel had his 4 month shots last week too! He got a high fever and was very sleepy, not even terribly hungry. He was that way the day of, and the day after the immunizations. He also had the hard sweeling at the injection site, (normal). Maybe the red circles were just from pulling the band-aid off? Maybe irritated the skin a bit? I dont think they use laytex or anything in band-aids anymore, that would cause an allergic reaction. But maybe...

That would be swelling, not sweeling!

Thanks, Chelsey, that's rea__suring...she had a *tiny* fever yesterday - 99.9...so nothing to be worried about there...it's just...I had a really hard time deciding that I was going to vax her, becasue of all the horror stories, so I was getting a little paranoid with the swelling.

hey! I have got to get our 2mth shots tom am. I am dreadn them. I hope my lil guy will be fine. If I have problems I will let you know

At Gabe's 2 month shots, he had no reaction at all.. but with his 4 mos., I actually started to think that he was one of the few that actually contracted a virus!

Good luck, tomorrow Dawn! And to your little guy too! I found that the most horrifying part was the screaming and crying that they do! I think the experience is harder on the parents, and not so much the baby!

Well...she just woke up again; I managed to nurse her back to sleep, but she's in definite pain. I think it's going to be a long night!

The red is probably a reaction to laytex if it is in the shape of the bandaid. Google laytex allergy and you will learn a lot. The reaction to the shot should calm down soon. If you feel it was too much to go through, don't get the next one. In other countries they don't give them as early as we do here. They wait until the immune system is stronger. My first had an awful reaction and I waited till 2 until I finished them.

Unfortunately, if I don't finish them, I lose all daycare priviledges, and would have to find a German pediatrician.

I think that's pretty common when they get the MMR. My older daughter used to get reactions to the bandaids. I bought some other bandaids and found some she wasn't allergic to, and after that we took our own bandaids to the doctor's office. She also had allergic reactions to the adhesive on the walmart smiley stickers...once a nice elderly doorgreeter gave her about 10 stickers, and she put them all over her face and arms. We took them off an hour later and she had huge red welts.

sounds like she could be developing something unhealthy I hope it's not something like the autism scare .

Jbear - December 11

Sorry, I just realized she wouldn't have had the mmr yet, she's about the same age as my younger one...the mmr was the one that bothered my older daughter the most. The four-month shots are just like the two-month shots. You've said in other posts that your baby is pretty active, so maybe she's just developed bigger muscles in her thighs and that's why she has the knots. She could be teething too, and that's why she was screaming.

Sorry Renity is having a hard time. When I took Nadya for her shots, the nurse said that if her legs reacted badly and got a big swollen, to put a cold flannel on the area, and that should soothe it. Fortunately nothing happened and I didn't need to, but you could try it. I have to take Nadya for more shots on thursday, and I get a wave of sickness, every time I think about it. Hate it!

A bit swollen, is what I meant. :)
