Selecting A Crib

Hello all. Our daughter will outgrow her bassinet real soon so we're getting a crib this weekend. Wanted to ask you if you like any specific ones and things such as a single side drop versus double. Any pointers would be greatly appeciated, so I won't have to go to the scary "general" forum :-)

Careful BBK, those scary people have a tendancy to "pop" over hear sometimes!... Anyways, we bought the single drop sided crib. I tend to break things really easy, and found that there is only one side to break if just the one side lowers. (I totally destroyed my daughters 2 sided drop crib when we moved). Besides that point... the less complicating the better! Just keep in mind that Anna is going to be sitting and pulling herself up in just a short few months, so those bars are going to have to be kept on "high alert" anyways. Also consider where you will be placing the crib. If it up against the wall, you only need the one side to drop. Keep in mind all the safety precautions when buying a crib. If you're looking at a model that is a__sembled, give it a good shake and test for sturdiness. Make sure the bars are proper width part, (a pop can shouldn't be able to go through the bars), and make sure you have a tight fitting mattress. As for specific brand, there are so many to choose from. Remember, safety first over popularity and style! But you're a smart Daddy, I dont need to tell you this...... Oh, and NO crib liners!!!!!

The crib we have is a convertable one. It doesnt have a drop down side. The back of the crib is higher than the front. So we have it placed against a wall. So far there really hasnt been a reason for a drop down side for me. I was just trying to think down the road for when amaya gets older. http://www.amayajayne.com/gallery/view_photo.php?set_albumName=Thenextday&id=IMAG0091 remember take out the -'s. That is a picture of it. It has worked wonderful for us.

Chelsey they don't get a big audience here.... I hope! Good tips, especially about the soda can and simplicity. Stephanie, I didn't even know they make cribs with no drop side. We're both fairly tall so a no-drop crib may fit the bill well since it's both simple and safe. Many thanks!

HA HA HA... you're right, BBK, the general forum IS scary. I can hardly stand to ask questions there anymore! lol :) Yours is a great question though as I'm trying to decide about cribs. Did you think it was worth it having a ba__sinet? What kind did you have? I'm trying to decide if I should get one..

I did a bit of looking around first and decided on the features I wanted, then went for the one that had it all!! Drop sides are good for the person making the bed (me). Ours turns into a bed when she's ready, and has "teething rails" which stop her chewing on the wood when she can get to it. Make sure you get the best mattress you can afford. And some plastic backed sheets to help contain any accidents.

Angela, :) we liked the ba__sinet as in the first weeks it was easy to wheel it everywhere and not wake up the baby. My mom was helping us so I wheeled the ba__sinet out to the guest bedroom before I left for work so my wife could get some morning sleep; and that was priceless (as in a mastercard commercial). We have the "eddie bauer by cosco" you can see it: http://snipurl.com/hpf4 On the downside it has a short life span, but I'm glad we had it as the baby has been a good sleeper and I've heard that some babies have trouble sleeping in a crib in the first few weeks. You may look in to a pack'n play ba__sinet too. Tahlia's Mama, which crib did you get (brand and model)? Agreed on the mattress it's super important for anyone, but especially a growing baby. I have seen those cribs that turn in to a toddler and then junior bed and was wondering about it. Sounds like a good idea, but apparently those multifunction cribs are not created equal. I'm looking at the reviews of some of the "Delta" units. Thanks again, very helpful comments!

Sorry BBK I didn't read your added post. Tahlia's cot is "Cambridge" by Childcare. Its made in New Zealand and conforms to all the Australian and NZ safety standards. It even has printed on the bottom the recommended mattress to put in it. Which did you end up buying?
