I believe that, yes, one small meal a day is appropriate for a 4.5 month old. Some rice cereal is the perfect starting food, and you can move up to some stage one foods like apples or pears soon after. Once you establish that your baby is not allergic to the first food, you can add one new food every three days, per pediatricians.

Hi! My son started solids at 3 1/2 months because he is a big boy! He ate at first 2 TBL spoons mixed with formula or b___stmilk,one a day for 1 month. After the 1st 2 weeks he started trying veggies & fruit stage 1. Just as Narcissus said you need to space new foods at least 3 days in a row. My son now hates rice cereal, errr. We have tried rice, mixed grain, rice w/banana's,and he hates all cereal. He now eats 3 x's a day fruit for breakfast 2.5 oz & lunch with cereal. He has rice and a veggie for dinner. Just be patient it takes time to take it from a spoon it took my son a good week before he got the hang of it. Good luck :O)

The reason I stress small meal is that starter foods are not DHA/ARA rich and the more you load your infant up on solids, the less milk (b___st or formula) she will get with those important amino acids that facilitate brain/eye development. I was really stingy with my son about meals, and I still am. I like him to get the max amount of formula that is recommended per day. If he is still hungry, I supplement with solids. Some days he is, others he is not.

I recommend starting with rice cereal also and then going to veggies before fruits. If you start with the fruits she may not like the veggies.

I give my 3 1/2 mo old one solid meal a day just to get thru the solids to make sure there are no allergies. I was told more was not necessary until around 6 mos old. It'll take me that long to get thru the foods since my son has a soy allergy so I have to try each new food for a week just to be sure. All is well with everything except bananas so far. He broke out a little and got constipated, so we'll hold off on those. Peaches gave him some gas LOL!!

that is a good age to start solids of cousre give her anything you try at least 4 days to watch for allergies. when i started my dd i did rice, oatmeal barley mixed grain then veggies (i would recomend carrots last cuz they seem a little sweeter) contuieing the one at a time for 4 days to check for allergies of course then fruits. when i added another catagory i added antohr time of the day she eats solids right now she has a 8 oz bottle in the morning a few hours later she has veggie and 4 oz juice, then a dinner with 1/2 jar dessert another 8 oz bottle and b4 bed a jar of fruit and cereal

Narc I have a question for you since you seem to know a lot about this stuff. When can they start having more food than Milk....I give my son b___st milk and I cant believe my mom is pushing for food over my milk. when we get home I make sure he has 3 feeding of my milk. As of right now he is having 1 jar of baby food and 28 oz of b___st milk...but yesterday my mom gave him two jars and he only had 8 oz of milk during the day....believe it or not from 5- 11 at night I feed him 20 oz of milk.....I have to talk to my mom I know she is all excited because she loves to see him eat and he loves it and opens his mouth real wide for her.

My 4 month old gets fussy around dinner time and I figured out it is because she wants to eat. I would b___st feed a few times before dinner time, but she gets so mad when we're all eating and she isn't! Anyway, now she eats about 1-2 tbspn of cereal and applesauce or bananas. She then will nurse and be happy.
