Toys

My little girl is becoming more aware of the world around her, and is actually doing something besides eating, sleeping, and pooing...(that "something besides" is staring at the ceiling...but I guess it entertains her) Anyway...I don't have ANY toys for her right now...I want to buy some, but am not sure what to get...I looked at Amazon.com, but everything seemed to be all bells, whistles, and flashing lights...but surely that stuff will get boring for her after a while...(then again, she IS fascinated by a ceiling so who knows?) Anyway, what toys would everyone recommend for babies under 12 months?

How old is she?

Jamie - September 2

She's only 3 weeks right now, but she's gonna get older.

This is what I used at that age - Sa__sy makes a mirror (google "me in the mirror") that Aja loved to stare into. It has polka dots and some toys on its perimiter. Also, there is a musical b___terfly by Bethany. He LOVED to stare at it. I recommend both of those items for now.

K, but do you have any recommendations for the months to come?

Oooh, I like that mirror thingy...that's awesome...maybe she'll like staring at that better than staring at the ceiling? (Sorry, that still just cracks me up...)

Infantino makes wonderful toys but they are for babies 3 months and over. I would go to Babies R Us and you will see so many wonderful options. Wait, you are in Germany... I will check online and name some good toys for you. The mirror is a favorite with babies at that age. It's hard for me to list all the toys that I bought. A toy you can never go wrong with are blocks. I stack them and tip them over in front of Aja. He loves to watch me do that:)

This site has the best toys, although they are all out of stock. Still, you can jot down the names and search for them elsewhere... I have the Infantino Toy Triangle. It is great:) Search under "Toys" and then "Infants". --- http://shop.mbeans.com

Hi Jamie, at 3 weeks my daughter loved the mirror thing as well. Also, there are some great baby einstien dvd's that she could stare at for at least 20 min. and that are quite educational apparently. What else.... when she got older (she's almost 5 months) her rocking chair had link-a-doo's coming down and she loved and still loves that. She's is just starting to enjoy her exersaucer and a baby einstien bouncing chair that has a piano attached. Hope this helps!

at first they will want things like mobiles that they can stare at, but as they get older they like to kick, as we speak one of my 3 month old twins is in his bouncie seat under a toy with lights and music that he can kick and make different noises happen like frogs croaking or birds chirping. then they like to grab stuff like rattles, or anything that is small enough to get their hands on. My oldest loved empty coke bottles (hehe) I also recommend the exersaucer, my oldest loved that from about 5 months to 9 months.(until he started walking then he did not want to be constrained. all of my kids loved the crib aquarium that played music and bubble sounds and they could watch the fish move when they were pretty little.

babies at 3 weeks can see black and white very well... so anything with polka dots would be awesome. A nurse in the hospital, after my baby was born, told me to not read into Baby Einstein too much. He said, that while it is entertaining, it doesn't remain on one screen for very long, before changing to a new scene. He said that if a baby gets used to seeing things changing over and over, with new images every 20 seconds or so, when they get older they expect that to happen all the time. On t.v, or in real life. Apparently someone did a study (I'll search for it), and he found it could lead to A.D.D. The child is so used to things constantly moving and changing, they cant concentrate on one thing very long, before going onto something else... I'll find the study, and report back to you all....

Baby Gym! worked great for my baby. Before he could really do anything I put him under it and he very quickly learned how to reach for the toys and kick them. He started to crawl at 6 months and now he is 7 months and even though he gets into everything he still likes his baby gym. Wal-mart has a good selection for low prices. Sorry to sound like a commercial.

I ordered two toys! LOL - I got that mirror, Narcissus, and also the Whoozit Water Mat from Target...anyone know anything about the water mat?

Narcissus - September 3

The water mat is filled on the inside with water, and the toys float. It will be a few months before your baby will enjoy that. It requires tummy time and your baby being able to lift her head to see the objects. Still, it is a great toy.
