my 4 month old baby just started tolling over. i put her to sleep on her back but she always rolls over i'm afraid that she will suffocate in her sleep. at what age does the risk of SIDS decreases? i've been tying a wedge pillow but she rolls out of it too. thanks for your help.

If your baby is strong enough to roll over, she isn't at much risk for SIDS. As long as she can move her head and whatnot. SIDS normally happens in newborns and fewer cases happen in babies older than 3 months. I would not use a pillow though because thats what increases the risks of suffocation/SIDS. I don't really know what a wedge pillow is but if it's made for babies, I'm sure it's alright. I think your baby is fine, she seems strong enough.

My doctor told me that what they used to think was SIDS, has changed alot, and they now have answers for. for instance, alot of cases have actually been that the baby has some how snapped the spinal cord at the base of their neck, while being held wrong or just by baby moving suddenly. Knowing this, the cases and risks have gone down significantly. There is still the possibility that your baby can suffocate with a pillow, or crib liner, so my suggestion to you is, if your baby is strong enough to move on her own, rolling around, then dont bother with the wedge pillow. If she's moving, maybe she's just trying to get comfortable. If she's choking on spittum, then she is obviously strong enough to turn her head to spit it out. They also say that a baby's greatest chance of SIDS is up to a year old. But there have been cases beyond that age.... just remember, cases have gone down, and if you take all neccessary precautions, then your baby will probably not be a statistic!

I wouldn't be putting anything in the crib to keep her from rolling over. I think that would be more of a risk than her rolling over. If she getting strong enough to roll then she should be able to move her head to the side to breathe. Definatly take the pillow out.

With #1, the ped. said that once she can roll over on her own, it is all right for her to sleep on her tummy. I still would start her out on her back, though. And defintely would take out any pillows from the crib.
