My son hasn't been born yet; I'm 20 weeks pregnant now. But I came to this posting board because I figured women who already have babies know best: Did any of you eat soft or semi-soft cheese that you weren't sure if it was pasteurized or not but it was cooked (like on a pizza for example), and your baby is okay? Please let me know! Thanks.

I didn't, either...but I think if it was cooked, you should be okay.

I stuck to stuff that was pasturized, but I did have feta, blue cheese, and goat cheese. If I wasn't sure, I didn't eat it. I think I may have had unpasturized cheese once or twice inadvertantly. Luckily, everything is ok.

I had some parmasan which u realised after wasnt pasturised, its only the risk of making you ill and therefor damaging baby, more dangerous first 12 weeks. I didnt have blue cheese, my favorite, incase.

I wasn't the pregnant one, but since my wife liked cheese at the time she ate quite a bit of it.... mostly cheddar though. Virtually all domestic cheeses are pasteurized and good sources of many nutrients. Imported blue cheese from France is unpasteurized to my knowledge. When in doubt, avoid it or melt it till it bubbles up.

I love brie and camambert, but knew I wasn't allowed to eat it during pregnancy,so I didn't.I just didn't think it was worth taking a chance.

Yeah, I avoided Brie since i usually is not pasturized. I did buy a bug wedge of it after having the baby and have been snacking away on it! Soooo good! :)

Thanks everyone. I had some asiago melted on pizza & ricotta inside a cooked calzone before I realized those are not really good cheeses to have during pregnancy, and they were both from restaurants, so hopefully all is fine.

i avoided soft cheeses too...and the danger isn't just in the first 12 weeks - my ob/gyn told me that pregnant women are 20 times more likely to get listeria from soft cheeses and that can cause stillbirths later on too.

I'm not sure, but I think Gouda is not a good-a cheese to have while pregnant, also.

I didn't eat any of the soft cheeses when I was pregnant and I LOVE feta in my pasta salads...More than likely your baby will be fine, but I'd caution against it in the future. My pregnancy books said not to eat luncheon meat, but I craved a LOT of subway so that was out of the window.

I avoided soft unpasteurized cheese if I prepared my own food but if I ate out I wasn't as picky. I also ate sushi, craved it big time! All three of my babies were born big, strong, and healthy. Moderation is the key... Hope you have a good pregnancy :).

I love sushi! Definitely on my top ten list of things to get stuck on a deserted island with! I know there's a big tabu about raw fish, but the way I see it, the Japanese have been doing it since the beginning of time, and are very healthy. I pretty much just listened to my body while pregnant, so many people forget to listen to their intuition, within reason of course! As long as the fish is fresh, the benefits far outweigh the possible risks.
