my baby has many folds of skin in his neck. and everyday, he sweats in this humid climate, he dribbles, he spits up milk, etc... it all finds its way to get stuck in the folds on his neck. he fusses a LOT when i try to clean him. I wonder if it hurts him. And recently, his neck has started to look raw. I try to clean him as often as possible and powder his neck but the powder only seem to add to the goo in his neck. what should i do?

My baby had the same problem. He hated having his neck washed because he is very ticklish. I think it is probably uncomfortable when it gets raw to have it washed. The most important thing is to get it clean and then thoroughly dried. It is hard to keep it dry when he is sweating. Try cornstarch instead of powder or powder with cornstarch in it. I hope it helps. Something to look forward to, eventually they get necks. :0)

The best thing you can do is to apply either Balmex or Desitin, twice per day after a cleaning. This will provide immediate relief to the sore area and prevent future irritation ( I know b/c I personally used it when my legs were burning from Nair Hair Remover). My ped suggested we do that, as our baby, and most babies, have this problem.

I just read today in a parenting magazine...American Baby...that baby powder can make the goo worse by locking in wetness. My son had the same problem. I used super mild baby soap in the bath tub and even if he didn't like me washing that area...I had to, I couldn't let it get worse ya know? I also recommend the diaper rash creams, I'd use Balmex since it's easier to wipe off. If it looks any worse in the next couple days, weeks, maybe you could take him to the doctors, rashes can turn into yeast bacteria infections which are not appealing. Good luck and try to keep your son out of the heat and humidity, that also leads to heat rash.

My girl gets the same thing from hot weather try desitin or plain cornstarch but only a little so it won't cake up and wash wash.

I never heard of the diaper rash stuff being used there. I wish I had known that then.

Brittany, Desitin makes a creamy version, which wipes off easily. I think you may be referring to the original desitin ointment. That is a pain to wipe.

sorry but, what is desitin? is it a nappy rash cream?? if so, do other nappy rash creams work as well?? i know i ask stupid questions...

My daughter had the same problem. I used diaper wipes to clean in the folds, and then aquaphor ointment to protect the skin.

wenling - it is not a stupid question at all. I know you are in a different country, so you may not have what we have. It is a diaper rash cream as is Balmex. I am not sure what you have in Singapore, that is equivalent.
