Jaundice is condition in newborns when the have too high a count of billirubin in their system which gives a yellowish tint to the skin and whites of the eyes. Billirubin is the substance produced by the body to break down old red blood cells. It is usually removed from the body through the digestive system, but Jaundice is common in newborns because the digestive system is sometimes not mature enough to break down the billirubin fast enough. It usually goes away in a week or two after birth.
