Sorry I didn't know where else to ask this question...Does anyone know if I could get the last name of my baby's father without him signing something? I live in Illinois and we aren't together. He wants the baby to have his last name however he'll be at a navy base when the baby is born. Anyone know?? Thanks for any responses!

When my son was born 13 years ago in Virginia, my boyfriend also wanted him to have his last name. The hospital required my boyfriend to sign a paternity paper and have it notarized. Not sure about the laws in your state, you can call your local vital records department (usually located within the health department) and they can advise you further. Hope it helps! Good Luck!

Yes, it varies by state. In some states I understand you can give the baby any last name you want, even if it isn't the last name of either parent!
