Catheders

Why is it some women get catheders? My girlfriend just had a baby and got one after. I was also on line writing a birth plan and it made mention of it, after the baby is born?? This is new news to me.

Well, if you have an epidural (maybe all pain killers?, but I had an epidural) you can't get up and move much less feel when you have to urinate so the give you a catheder. (sp?) I had a catheder after because your bladder must be completely drained before your uterus will fall back in place. After my baby was born and the epidural removed you have to walk on your own, urinate, and your uterus has to shrink below your belly b___ton in order for you to be moved to your recovery room. I hope that helps. Maybe a few others will add their experience, esp. if they had natual birth.

what is a cathetier,

Basically a tube that goes into your bladder and empties it as needed into a bag. so you don't have to get up to go to the bathroom.

you should look at the thread "For those of you who want an epidural". There is my story of why I had to have a catheter after birth.

i would explain it as.......not being able to control your bladder so they help you out with a catheder. You also cant even feel it when its in, i remember looking at the tube and seeing urine go down and didnt even feel it. it was a little weird. but not bad. I did have a hard time going to the bathroom on my own once it was out. It took me a while, so the nurse turned on the water to help it move along, it did help.

I had a light epidural, and they just came in once and inserted the catheter, drained my bladder, and removed the catheter... 40 minutes later I was holding my daughter, and 1 hour after that I was up and showering. Maybe it depends on how strong your epi was?

I had an epidural and they putin a catheter. I ended up having a c-section so my catheter was in for a while. I was freaked out about getting one but to be honest it was no big deal. It doesn't hurt and I never even noticed it.
