when i have my baby i really want to bank his cord blood, but is it something i just tell the hospital when i get there or do i have to set up things and plan it ahead of time? and also how much does it normally cost?

You must register with a cord blood banking company and receive a kit from them that you take with you at delivery. There are payment plans available with different companies. I used viacord and it cost about $1800 to get started and then $125 a year for a storage fee. We payed for ours up front but they did offer 6 months no interest and a few other options. Good luck!

make sure to talk with your doctor about banking cord blood in your area. some cities have a cord blood collection agency already established and you don't have to go through a private company to purchase the kit. My husband has MS and we were very excited to bank the baby's cord blood. But, when we talked with my OB we were told that the marketing behind banking cord blood is far more advanced than the technology and with the political hang ups on stem cell research the technology is not moving forward much. He said that by the time the technology catches up any cord blood that is a match will work for any patient. It's possible that we could pay to have the cord blood banked and then in 3 years our baby is diagnosed with lukemia. We have the cord blood banked, but the hospital would not have the technology to use it. It would do us no good. We chose not to bank the cord blood.
