I am 36 weeks along and i have decided that i do not want to have an epidural due to recent back problems. when i was 16 i was in a bad wreck and my back bones were "compressed" together they said. They told me my lower L4 and L5 discs were compressed together and when my dr was explaining how they do an epidural he informed me that they stick the needle inbetween the 4 & 5 Lumbar discs. I told him mine we compressed together and he said i should be fine. Ever since he told me that is where the shot is located i have been freaked out about havin a epidural. I dont want to be paralyzed the rest of my life, i heard that 1 in 40,000 women become permantly paralyzed from an epidural. Ppl tell me im crazy and that i should worry about it. Im torn!!

You can go just above and just below those vertabreas too. It is scary...just wait and see what you need. GL!

I can't help you with the epidural question, but have you ever thought of seeing a chiropractor for your back? They can usually fix compressed back bones without a problem. If your comfortable with the idea, it might be something to look into.

I had a similar fear to yours.... I have a very bad fear of needles.... I didnt want an epidural but when I had my son the contractions were so bad that I was willing to face the needle just to get me out of the pain, if your doc says you should be ok, I'd trust him, but DeeD also has a good point, just wait and see how your labor goes, when the time comes you will know exactly what to do and what you need. I am sure you wont become paralyzed, if the anesthesiologist isnt comfortable with giving you the epidural with the way your back is, he'll (or she) will tell you... but you'll be ok and GL!!!!!!!!
