How Long Before Real Labor

I am at the beginning of 38 weeks, I was checked this morning and have already dialated to 4 and my water sac is bulging. I hurt down there when I walk, am still have braxton hicks contractions, but also cramp like ones in my lower abdomin and groin. These are about 30 min to an hour apart. I am having some slight discharge. Any idea how long before it really starts?

Not to disappoint you, but you could still be weeks away. I was checked at 38 weeks, and was same thing.. dialated, effacing, head engaged, water sac bulging, so she stripped my membranes, and dr told me she wouldnt be surprised if i went that weekend.... yeah well.. here i am 2 weeks later at my due date, and no sign of anything yet. I hope that's not the case for you, but try not to get your hopes up too high like I did, as it just makes for a lot of disappointment.

I agree with mshanson... I was 4cm for weeks with my daughter. You really can't tell, hopefully it will be soon though.
