Natural Vs Induced Labor

Just wanted to get an opinion from some of you that have already had babies before... This is my first pregnancy and I am at 38 and 1/2 weeks right now my OB said if I do not go into labor naturally by the 40th week I have the option to be induced.... I just want to know what is the difference and which is better for the baby? which is more painful?

I've only had an induced labor. When they put the pitocin at the highest level I didn't even have spaces b/w ctx.'s- it was like one huge ctx. for hours until I finally got the epidural, but I don't have a natural labor to compare it to. My one friend has 4 boys- first three all natural (no induction, no pain meds), last one induced, but no pain meds. and she says that induced is worse and harder to work with your body. Good luck- it's a tough decision!

well if you are to induce labor and the baby still does not come out because you are not dilating. Which can happen. You may contract and not dilate. So you may be in pain for nothing and may have to have a c section because you stress the baby. This happen to my sister with her first child. I my self have three and recall with my second child asking a dr. if I could be induced and he told me you read up ask friends and family and we will talk at your next appointment. Unless it is DR. ordered why make your body do something if it is not ready. It will happen on its own.

All my boys were natural except my last one. Labor began on its own but they gave me pitocin to speed things up and I hope to never do that again. After the pitocin the contractions were worse and more difficult than I had with my previous pregnancies. This is just my experience. My boys always went a day or two beyond their due date, it wasn't unbearable.

I had what happened to Kris K's sister happen to me....I was in labor for 12 hrs...only for him to be taken by c-section his hb was rising and they just couldn't chance it anymore. I don't have a natural birth to compare it too, but I chose my induction, I do know that I will NOT choose to do so again.

I was induced at 39 wks because of health issues with my son. I had 3 doses of the gel before it achieved any results. Finally on my 3rd day in hospital, I started having contractions and they were very sudden and painful. I ended up being given the epidural to sleep for a couple of hours, as I was too physically drained from being monitored for 3 days. Although I do not have a natural delivery to compare it to. With my next child, I will be pleased that I get to experience labour naturally.

I do think u should rather not induce due dates arent exact sciene and as long as baby is still ok just enjoy the last days on your own and relax - this will aready help with your labour (ps sleep sleep sleep) I also had that option but chose to wait and gues what my baby came 2 days later!!

I had one induced and one natural... the induced one was longer but not as painful (1st baby) the second baby was natural and was shorter but I think it hurt a whole lot more. I don't know if it matter that it was the 1st and second baby or not.

instead of getting induced with pitocin, have you thought about discussing artificial rupture of membranes to get things going---closer to 40 weeks---..you have a good chance of going into labour within a few hours after that, and if not---THEN go for the pitocin.

Well just to inform u on what I learned. I was suppose to have my baby in a hospital but I changed my mind because the place I was going to to have my prenatal visits treated me horrible. So I found a maternity birthing center.. if you have medicaid or other insurance it will cover everything. But anyway...this place is one of the best things dat has ever happened to me. I go there for my visits and I am also having my baby there. The labor rooms are GREAT! Beautiful with HUGE jacuzzis. You can have a water birth if you like! The first day I went there they gave me a tour and i loved it...everyone was so nice... it's like a family. But Once I went on my tour something told me to ask if they give epidurals. The lady told me NO! I thought I would have a heart attack! I foung out that midwives are very old fashion and they are highly educated about laborso they are against alot of those drugs. So i sat down and watched a viedo and one of the midwife was talking about how the hospital deliver babies and the mistakes dat they make. They talked about inducing labor and when I saw that i nearly fell out my seat. When they induce your labor... what is does is forces the baby to come out, so the baby's head pounds down on your cervics even when you are not fully dialated. This is dangerous because i can give the baby some brain damage because the head is pounding down on the cervics very hard and the cervics isn't open yet. Your baby isn't ready to come out but the induction is forcing it. I was surprised when I saw this! I never knew that! They even talked about epidurals and I was looking forward to one sooooo bad but they dont do those kinda things. They talked about the disadvantages of epidurals and how the baby is druged as well as you once they give it to you. Seeing that made me feel better about goin natural, but still, when that pain comes I'm not goin to be thinking about the disadvantages of the epidural...I'm gonna want the pain to just go away! So i decided to do the water birth...alot of the women there had their babies that way and they said even though it's still painful it soothes the pain more than just being on the bed, so i'll try that! Plus they give you pre-labor cla__ses so get you prepared! I dont know how much dat will help but I hope it help someway! Thousands of motheres had there children there and they did it so I can too! I was suprised to see how many women had natural and healthy births...not c-sections or anythin! There is a 2% rate of women who have to be sent to the hospital because of complications, which i find unbelievable! But at the center there are 20 walls with pictures of the mother's with there baby's after they've been delivered, so I know it is true!

EmpressNnena, some of that sounds like it was just marketing for their way of doing things. But there are risks with inductions. There is a much higher rate of c-sections after inductions than after a natural "start". Just understand that you can't stop an induced labor if it's not progressing. It's not worth the risk just so that you can make sure you have your regular doctor.

Well I was induced with my first pregnancy at 38 weeks d/t HB. At that point I was already dilated to 2cms and 100% effaced so my body took the induction great. My labour was fast (5.5 hours total) and I had a healthy and alert baby girl with no episiotomy or intervention. There were no signs of "drugs" in my infant or myself from the epidural and I was up and walking with in a hour. I will say that the pitocin contractions prior to the epidural were very intense adn right on top of each other but since I have nothing else to compare it to it wasn't that bad. I am now 18 wks with my second and will not be bothered by another induction if the doctor calls for it.

My SIL was going to be induced and the midwife gave her some things to start drinking round 1 o clock that morning and guess what before she took her first sip she started labor naturally - I still say unless absolutely neccessary rather wait!
