This is my 1st child and it will be a boy. I am 38 weeks pregnant and doc told me that I have still not dilated and as far as I know I have not effaced at all. Do dilation and effacement happen only gradually or can it happen quickly also? I have had a lot of discharge and have been real nauseated lately. I don't even think I have had and braxton hix contractions. I am just so confused! Please give me your input.

I just went through what you just discribed. My little boy was born May 24. I went to the doctor for my 40 week check up to find out that I had finally started to dialate. 5 days later, I went into labor around 2 a.m. and delivered at 3:30 p.m. When you and your baby are ready, labor will begin. If not, there are options you can talk to your doctor about.
