UTI Caused Early Labor

Has this happened to you? I Just wanted to warn you out there of something that can happen because I had no idea. I began having contractions on Thurs at 3:00am. They were 15 min apart, not hurting. Then around 8:00 they hit 10 min apart, finally at 10:00 they hit 5 min apart and hurt. I drove home from work to be with my husband. We knew for sure I was in labor. I am planning on having an unmedicated birth so we stuck it out for quite some time at home, in pain trying all the techniques you learn in lamaze. Finally by 1:00 the contractions were 2-3 min apart and I was in so much pain I couldn't even tell when one stopped and one started. Sure enought when I was hooked up to the monitor my contractions were 2-3 min apart lasting at least 1 min a piece. Only problem...I wasn't dialated! They had me walk, do the drill and I would not dialate. Come to find out when the results of my urine test came back I had a VERY BAD Urinary Tract Infection. The ecoli bacteria had also gotten into my kidney and bloodstream (this means my baby had the infection as well). They gave me a shot of Breathine to stop contractions, and demerol for pain and sent me home. I had really been in labor, UTI's can put you into labor early. However my body wasn't ready to progress. Two days later my fever kept spiking to over 102 (remember, I'm pregnant) I was admitted to the hospital for 3 days and given fluids, medicines through IV and they wouldn't let me go until my fever was gone for 24 hours. If anyone had this let me know, but believe me it was frustrating. After a whole day of labor contractions...no baby. After 3 days in the hospital...no baby. Also, I was 38 weeks anyway....that was hard. Now I am 1 week overdue!!!!

I have been having contractions becuase of a urinary tract infection as well! I had no idea that this could happen. I am 37 weeks now and they have me on antibiotics, but I am still contracting about 8 minutes apart all day, every day. I am thinking that this infection is going to clear up and I am going to stop contracting and have my baby late as well-that is my fear at least! Were you dilating and effacing with the contractions? My cervix was closed at the hospital, but the next week I was dilated to a 1 and starting to efface so we'll see what I am at at my Tuesday appointment! Good luck and keep me updated. Are you having a girl or a boy?
