I used to live in the us and my first delivery cost my insurance over 35.000 dollard it was very complicated and had emergency c-section, I only had to pay for copay for my office visits 10. dollars but the service that I got in the US.was amazing,I used to pay 700. dollars a month for health insurance,I live in canada now and I had compare the two of them and I would prefer to pay the 700. a month for insurance, I had to wait to see a doctor until I was 7 months and could not find a midwife because there is no enough so it has it downs but Canada is ok .

You guys PAY to have a baby? wow! I live in N.Ireland (part of UK) and we have our babies in hospital for free including any health check ups, baby vaccines etc. But we pay taxes so its not 'free', we just don't have to pay money upfront like that.

Either way you look at it you pay for healthcare-either through taxes or insurance. But I get my 52 weeks of EI maternity. I know that there is a serious healthcare shortage in Canada, our wages are not as high for health care professionals. I am sorry I take offence that Canada sucks. We do have great doctors here as well. I have had awsome care. I will say my next door neighbour had a ma__sive heart attack while in Florida and he was left on a stretcher until his insurance was verified that it would cover the surgery so I guess no Country is perfect. I guess I just find it easier to pay the government at the end of the year and being able to walk into the doctors or hospital at any time and not worrying about cost.

Sorry, I know that this thread is about money, but holy s**t candaceann1 you sound like what we Canadians refer to as an 'ignorant american.' I am by no means bashing Americans, just people like you. I am happy you have no intention of crossing over into Canadian soil because us easy going Canadians don't want you to ruin the good vibes we have up here.

candaceann seems a little cooky - in any case i guess we all have our issues. i had my first baby with tricare (im a military spouse) and it was fantastic and i had no payments throughout my whole pregnancy and L&D. I was in FL at the time and I believe that the bills were between $7k-$10k. my second baby will be delivered on a military base so again free (although its a combat hospital- were o/s- so the maternity care isnt as thorough as civilian care but its still fine). also im australian and we have free healthcare there, but if you make a certain amount of money you are encouraged - not forced - to take private health insurance which gives you more immediate access to drs + hospitals, although emergencies are never turned away. also the government gives you about $4000 to have a baby - gotta keep that birthrate up!
