I am 35 weeks and 5 days at the moment. This is my second pregnancy. With my first pregnancy I took 2 oz castor oil at 37 weeks and 1 day. I took it with orange juice at about 4:00pm by that night I started having regular contractions, my husband took me to the hospital at 6:00 the next morning. My baby was born at 4:34 that day he weighed 7lbs and 5 oz. I never had the runs or any bowel movement for that matter. So in my opinion castor oil works great, and I plan to use it to go into labor with this baby. I do reccomend waiting until at least 37 weeks, because the baby is considered full term. I hope my story helps. ZGood luck to you all!

I thought 38 weeks was considered full term, not 37 or 36

37 is concidered full term---36 is borderline...but concidered premature.

Hi Joanne, My doc wanted to induce me at 38 weeks, due to PIH. I wanted to avoid a pitocin induction, so I decided to try the castor oil. I took 2 ounces in cranberry juice (it doesn't really have a taste, but it's VERY oily; I had to keep adding more juice until I final got the 2 ounces down). It was 8 pm when I took the castor oil and I was "all cleaned out" by 11 pm. It wasn't pleasant, but it also wasn't the worse case of diarrhea that I've had. Anyway, I was in the early stages of labor by midnight and my daughter was born at 2:46 the next afternoon after only 10 minutes of pushing! I would definitely do the castor oil next time around, if the need arose (this was my first baby, by the way). Hope this helps! Let me know if you have questions - Greta

Hi everyone.....I am 37 wks, took castor oil 2 tbs at 1 pm, nothing, then again at 4:30. I mixed with Coke, made it really easy to drink, but nothing's happened as of yet. Not even a bm...

i have been on this site for about a week now contemplating whether or not to take this castor oil stuff.. i am 39 wks and decided wth becuz i was refused last minute for an induction last week..and i was not very impressed, the attending OBS did not think induction was necessary for me since i had no High BP, or gestational.. my family dr. felt that it was necessary becuz the baby measured quite large(fundal ht) i bought the oil, and the OJ poured about 2 TBSP out of the bottle and poured 2TBSP of the oil.. drank like a quarter of it.. Nothing was happening i was so discouraged, so i took a nap, and woke up and still no pains cramps or diarrhea, had some supper, and BAM my bowels started moving,, first BM was soft, second one was a bit runny.. then after BM #2 i felt a strong contraction,.and i am still contracting right now..i am sitting home waiting it out for a bit til the pains become too intense.. i will let yous all know what happened ok..

I drank it on Saturday around 12:00 or so and by 7:00 that night I was having contractions that were about 5 min. apart and then by midnight they were 3 min. apart. When I went to the hospital I was not dilating any more than 1 cm. and my contractions were not patternable, meaning they were not as strong everytime. So they just gave me a nubain shot and an ambien to sleep and sent me home. So to answer your question it just threw me straight into early labor and I'm still going through it. And also if you drink it be prepared to get diarhea for a few hours.

I'm really constipated, so I'm taking the stuff and maybe I'll get a double benefit. Get me a baby an over-due baby AND an overdue bowel movement. DOWN THE HATCH!

Okay, I am giving my update. I tried MINERAL OIL instead of castor oil, and it didn't work. It's all the pharmacy had. Well, It made me poop, but that's it. So I went to a new pharmacy today, and the parmacist explained the two oils are very different. Mineral oil is just a lubricant, where as castor oil is actually a stimulant on the intestines (and also the uterus at the same time) causing contractions on both smooth muscles. Indeed it does say right on the front of the bottle, "stimulant laxitive". So I bought some, and I just took 1 oz with juice. I was chicken to take 2 oz. I figure I can try again in the morning.
