I am having my membranes sc___ped tomarrow! I was told this would probley brake my water, Is this common? And what really is a membrane sc___pe?

I had this done two days ago. It was the most painful, traumatic experience I've ever had. Since then, my perspective on induction has also changed greatly. I thought I had wanted things to move along quicker, mostly because of impatience and discomfort. However, now I'm perfectly content in letting nature take its course. This change in mindset has made the waiting much easier.

i had a swwep yesterday. a little uncomfortable, my tip make sure you have an empty bladder before hand as it helps ease the pressure. i certainly have found smears more painful in the past.

At my last appointment, after my doctor checked me for dilation...I asked her about the procedure. She went on to inform me that she JUST DID IT! I couldn't even tell she did anything different...I wasn't expecting any pain and I was very relaxed. Didn't hurt a bit.

i just got back from the hospital. I'm 40 weeks tomorrow. i had a sweep done and it was slightly uncomfortable. nothing major. i was a bit worried because i heard it hurt but trust me there was no pain involved at all just some pressure which makes the experiance uncomfortable. good luck on having your babies!! xx

i think it's irresponsible to compare a membrane sweep to a elephant raping you. come on ladies, what are you going to do when you actually go into labor? i had my membrane swept about two hours ago at my dr appt. (i'm due in 6 days) and it was a little uncomfortable, but NOTHING like these other people are saying. i agree that a pap smear is way more uncomfortable than this was. there was some blood afterward, but nothing major. i've been getting consistant contractions since my appointment, 1 every 15 minutes or so... best advice i can give- W-A-L-K!

Every woman is different. If your cervix is very sensitive at the moment it can hurt pretty bad. I had it done at my last three appointments with my son and each time it got more painful. The last time made my eyes water. Each time it made me go into a contraction immediately. The last time worked though cause I had my son the next day. (Dec. 3, 2004)

By the way, for those asking what it is, you have to be dilated at least a little for it to be done, the midwife (or doctor, or nurse) slips a finger between your cervix and your bag of waters and sweeps her finger around seperating some of the membranes that are there.

I had a membrane sweep at 40weeks +1 and it didn't work, went back today (41 weeks) to have another one. I would say its uncomfortable but nothing like labour itself (this is my 3rd baby) ...It is like having a smear and afterwards I bleed and have a few discomforts down below but if it means not being induced, which means I won't get my 3rd water birth, then I'll try anything. Being induced in 6 days if it doesn't work so I'm hoping it'll kick start things as soon as possible.

Well had my 2nd Membrane sweep on wednesday, its now friday, and that hasn't worked either, being induced on Tuesday. Have asked for a 3rd and final membrane sweep on monday just in case i can start off naturally, so I can have my pool birth. Hope yours works heidi - good luck

Sabrina - July 1

If you request to have this done.. will they do it? My dr's havent mentioned anything about ANY way of inducing my labor until I'm 2 weeks past due! And then the only thing they've mentioned is breaking my water.

Ive had two now. one on Wed, which didnt hurt abit. I then had another on Fri and the midwife did say she'd be more brutal, and belive me that one was uncomfotable. I went home and started spotting, i then got quite regular pains but decided to sleep on it. I wish i hadn't. When i woke up pain was gone! Im gutted, now they'll be inducing me tomorrow. I really wanted to avoid that. Hoping to get another sweep done today. Its fustating but i do think it would have worked, well worth any discomfort the midwife causes ive been induced before and thats the horrid bit for me! Ill post again if a 3rd one works. Some babies are stubborn, this is my second im 3cm and fully effaced but its not budging!
