It's mucus and plugs the cervix to help keep unhealthy stuff out of the uterus basically. It comes out before or durning labor. It looks like globs or strings of snot, like when you have a cold. Gross, but true. Some notice losing it and some don't.

My plug started to come out at 37w. I am now 40.5w and it is coming out like there is no tomorrow. i wonder how much there actually is to come out. anyway I think the mucus plug is the cooled part of the 4rd trimester!

im 39 weeks and over the last say 4 weeks have noticed a white thick discharge on occa__sions, then last night a little bit pinky red, it has stopped again now, but im pretty sure its the plug,it must just come away in spurts, and i reckon the babys head has been pushing on it, making it come loose, there is like no room in my belly At ALL .. hopefully im on my way,,, fingers crossed it wont be long now...kristina , check with your doc , make sure you dont have an infection,,

I lost mine last night and was just wondering if this means that I am dialating or not? I had a membrane sweep and the doctor said that my cervix was ery closed, then 5 hour later I pa__sed my plug. Just wondering if I am progressing.

mucous plugs are also called "bloody show". If you feel you've lost your mucous plug, or have had a loss of blood, call your doctor to make sure. If you did lose the mucous plug, it means your cervix has already begun to prepare itself (thin out and/or dilate), and labor could be anywhere within the next 2 weeks.
