i have never heard of not being able to get an epidural if you have a tattoo on in the injection site. When you get a tattoo you are getting ink into your bloodstream anyway.. you can bleed quite a bit when you get a tattoo. That said, if you have a lower back tattoo.. your epidural is more middle to upper back so don't worry. i have a lower back tattoo and my epidural wasn't even CLOSE to where it is.

alright, so, it seems like there are quite alot of different views on this whole epidural with a tattoo thing. truth is ladies, you can have an epidural if you have a lower back tattoo, yes, EVEN if the needle pa__ses through the ink, the ink will NOT be pushed through into your spine it stays within your layers of skin. Now, some doctors dont fully understand the world of tattooing, and some may never...you see tattooing is such a grey area and although they may be excellent at delivering children they are clueless to the facts of inking. as for the streching of tattoos during pregnancy, there really isnt any way to avoid that, yes vit E may help but once that ink under your skin streches, its very unlikely it will go back to looking the same. Many shops though do and can cover existing tattoos and many of you may consider finding a new tat to completely cover your old one.

I'm trying to have a baby and I have two tats one on each of my hips on my back. do you think it will stretch them out if i get pregnant?

not true, I have a tattoo on my lower back right on my tail bone and never had a problem with getting an epidural or the epidural ruining the tattoo, I have had 2 epidurals.

I had a piece of hip bone removed in 97',then got a tattoo to cover up the scar.In 02' I had my daughter and only got stretch marks that seemed to branch off of my tattoo on my hip.So I went and got my tattoo touched up and added onto, and you couldnt even tell there were stretch marks.Well, I'm 38 weeks now,and once again stretch marks branching off of the tattoo, and now on the other hip also.So Im already visiting the tattoo shop to see new art.

Is it safe to get a tattoo while pregnant also I know a girl who tanned in tanning beds throughout her pregnancy. Are tanning beds considered safe during pregnancy?

I think the only think you have to worry about is it stretching. It may not look the same once your skin gets back to normal.. but that's just a guess.

Nope. Had an epidural with my tattoo. The only thing that happened on my back were a few stretch marks but even they faded. Plus all tats have to be touched up every once in a while.

To Rachel--Most places will not give you a tattoo if you disclose that you are pregnant. If it were somewhere like your arm or something I don't think I would even tell them. They don't do this because it's dangerous but because they don't want to be liable in case something happens. Same as with hair salons, we cannot give chemical treatments to women that are pregnant, although it's never been proven to be dangerous to receive a color or perm every few months while pregnant. It's just a precaution many places such as this take in order to prevent law suits. But if you are going to get a tattoo somewhere on the torso region, I would wait until after the baby is born--because you could develop stretch marks that ruin the fresh ink.

I use to volunteer in the operating room of a hospital. I also have a tattoo on my lower back and I brought up the question of getting an epidural with many of the doctors/surgeons in the lunch room. Half said it wasn't a good idea and the other half said it's safe. It just depends on the doctor. I'm nine months pregnant now and if they doctor that delivers me says no to an epidural, I will just ask him about proof of it being risky.

*************************************************************************************************************************************** I am a tattoo artist, and I can help everyone with these questions.First of all ,alot of these questions and statements are totally NOT TRUE !!!
I have been doing tattoos for over 15 years, and I hope that you will listen to what I say here.and if you have any more questions please feel free to email me tattz77@yahoo.com.........
1---you are NOT at risk of infection because you have a tattoo, when you get an epidural.the epidural itself is what runs you a risk of infection, just ask your doctor !!!
2---everyone is different.some peoples tattoos stretch out and stay a little messed up,and some don't.
3---I DO NOT suggest getting a tattoo if your pregnant, simply because you CAN wait. Why run the risk?is it really worth it?
4---sometimes doctors act like they know about tattooing because it is close to a surgical procedure.but they only know how to be a doctor(hopefully a good one)........
I am a professional Tattooist and over the years I have Tattooed over 5,000 different people.please email me if you have any questions.
