What Is Stripping Your Membanes

I've been reading questions and answers from other people just to get knowledge about my pregnancy. I recently read about women having their doc. strip their membranes. My question is what is having your membrane stripped?

It's where the Dr. does a finger sweep between the cervix and sac to seperate the two and speed up labor.
