I had a scan last Friday, at what I had calculated as 7w 1d and the Dr. found a sac size of 6w 3d and couldn't see anything in it. I was devastated after having 4 previous miscarriages. My Hcg levels were good, had doubled and were around 57,000. I cried all weekend. The following Mon, I had another scan - low and behold, there was a baby, a beating heart and measured 7w 3d, perfect! The second DR. said that the baby was sitting in an akward position that made it difficult to find. Fingers crossed for the next 4 weeks, and hope to others in the same situation.

Naomi- Thats great and even your first scan wasn't that off. I mean they say give or take 2 weeks. Yours wasn't even off by one week and your HCG was perfect! hehe. So, that is so wonderful and I'm glad everything turned out OK and I am sure everything will. Congrats!!!! If you Email me at Jarhead4me2@aol.com I can send you my 7.5 week ultrasound pic and my 11 week ultrasound pic. of my healthy pregnancy. He measured dead on every single scan. Then again we knew our exact date of conception (hey, if you only have s_x one day can't go wrong).. so that helped. But if you dont, then I wouldn't worry if its a few days off. I am so glad you got great news!! How wonderful you must be feeling now. :)

When I was 9 1/2 weeks pregnant with my son that same thing happened and my hormone levels were going up. My doc said, "that's good see you both next month" and we did see him next month. He was born 8lbs 15oz. He a happy five-year-old now. Good Luck

Hi there, I went for an u/s last week at 7 weeks & the dr told us that their is a yolk but no heart beat & this was not a good sign. The sac had grown since my last appointment. The dr. told us to return in 10 days for another u/s. I am now in my six day waiting & have no sign of miscarring....wouldn't I have miscarried by now???? Any one have an idea of what is going on???

Hi Everyone, I am new to this forum but I am also going through a miscarriage due to a blighted ovum and I just wanted to share my experiences as this has happened to me three times. It is very common. When you have a blighted ovum the fertilized ovum implants normally but the fetus inside the sac fails to develop properly, however the membranes around the sac which are responsible for producing the pregnancy hormones do develop. This is why you have rising HcG levels and many pregnancy symptoms even though the pregnancy has stopped. In my case I had what I thought were normal symptoms (this was pregnancy number 8, God blessed me with four beautiful boys). I had one night of brown discharge at 6 weeks and was told by my OB office this was normal. My morning sickness, fatigue etc developed after that and continued right until 9-10weeks, and then still intermittently. At what I though was 11 weeks I had pink discharge and I went for a U/S to see an empty sac dated at 6 weeks. I had 5 weeks of symptoms although the fetus had not developed!!!. The ER Dr told me to expect a heavier than normal period and that has just started. If this is happening to you I would advise you let nature take its course and the miscarriage happen naturally as this will probably be your body coming back to its natural cycle and should actually coinside with your next period. This has happened to me each time, I have had 3 blighted ova. I have had 4 miscarriages, the other one the fetus died at 9weeks and I was given prostaglandin suppositories and these led to a very intense morning, lots of cramps and bleeding and then an incomplete miscarriage, diagnosed 6 weeks later which led to a d/c. However, please take heart, on all occasions after miscarrying I became pregnant straight away (within1-2months) and had healthy children so please do not despair. I read somwhere that after a miscarriage you still have pregnancy hormones in your blood and it almost primes your body for the next try. These babies were not meant to be, but God will give you what you wish for when the time is right.

Hi again,
I just wanted to give you all an update. Exactly 10 days after our last u/s (& the morning when I was due for my next u/s) I started to miscarry. We went to the u/s appointment & the dr. confirmed that I was miscarring.
The yolk had developped into a fetus but had no heart beat. I didn't want a d&c nor did I want the pill that would "help" it along.
I choose the natural way. Let me tell you it was the worst experience of my life. This is my second miscarriage, however the first one was nothing like this one & I was further along with the first.
Maybe because I've given birth in between....?? By C-section???
Now my dr. wants to do gentic testing??? Any one know why????
Hang in there.

Hi Roselli, I expect your Dr wants to do genetic testing because in most cases a blighted ovum ids due to defective chromosomes. However, it is what they call a non-repetable genetic defect which means it should not keep recurring for the same reason. An empty sac could be because of a defective egg, a defective sperm, lack of proper cell division in the developing fetus all of which are controlled by different genes. Ask your Dr why in your case he thinks this is necessary, they usually do this only after 3 consecutive miscarriages. He may be doing research or just being very thorough. You are lucky to have such a caring Dr, I cannot get an appointment with my OB for 8 weeks even when I am having am spotting during pregnancy, we just get a standard message from the receptionist "Don't worry!" Which really doesn't help much.

Hi Jem, Thanks for the info. I've had 2 miscarriages but gave birth to a healthy baby in between. I see my doctor on Monday & will ask him the details.
Again thanks. With my last pregnancy I spotted for 3 months & all was fine in the end. Good luck.

Hi Roselli, Usually they only ask questions when you have had 3 miscarriages in a row with no healthy pregnancy. I had 1 m/c then 3 healthy pregnancies, no spotting etc etc, then 2 m/c, then 1 baby and now another m/c and noone is questioning anything. I would be interested to hear what your doctor has to say so if you have a chance post back after Monday. Our doctors here have too many patients and cannot take the time with individuals, all is OK if you are just there for routine checkups but anything that may take longer is not welcomed and nothing extra is offered. Good luck

Hi Jem,
I just returned from the Doctor's office. Had another internal u/s. AAll was clear & don't need a d&c. Concerning the gentic testing (which aparently are VERY expensive) we will begin with a thyroid test (which was a little high when I was pregnant with my son & no one told me)
Then we will decided if we need to do the rest. What do you think???
Also the doctor told us we could begin trying as soon as we were comfortable. Weird???
How are you doing? By the way which state/country do you live in? Just wondering so I could compare the doctors policies.
Hang in! Hope to hear from you

Hi Roselli, Thanks for the update. The reason your Dr is doing a thyroid test is because an overactive thyroid can cause miscarriage, but it can be controlled before conception and that eliminates the risk. But women with very seriously overactive thyroids carry their babies to term so this is probably not the reason for your last miscarriage, it is much much more likely to be chromosomal. But I expect your doctor is being thorough and eliminating any possibility of problems with the next baby. It seems like your m/c was complete, as for mine I have been bleeding for a week, slowly, like half way through a normal period, no cramping, no clots, nothing like my other 3 miscarriages so I have no idea what is going on, is this it? is there more to come? I still have an appointment at my doctors for March 19th (supposed to be my 14 weeks checkup!!) so I will keep that in case nothing changes. AS for trying again immediately, I did with my 4th child, I had an incomplete m/s, mainly beacuse I was given a pill to hurry things along, but it went too fast and left some tissue in the uterus, so I had a d/c, within a couple of weeks I had my period and then concieved straight after, I did not wait one whole cycle, certainly not 3 as some suggest. When this is over I will try straight away again, at least when I am trying I feel better, it is the inbetween bit I do not like. I suppose the feeling of hope helps. I live in Canada where we have no private health insurance and it certainly shows, if I need to see a doctor I usually wait until 10-11pm on a week night and go to the ER (even if it is not an emergency)at the local hospital, the wait is much shorter and I do not have to take the children with me. I have waited 5-6 hrs in a walk-in medi-center with 4 children because my son had a sore throat and no doctor would give me an appointment for 2 days. Originally I am fom England and their system is marginally better there. Everything is fine until things go wrong and you need the medical system. I am sure the Prime Minister of Canada and his children do not sit endlessly in hospitals and walk in medicenters for their health care. Anyway, I hope you are feeling better, let me know how you get on. Good Luck

Here is a little hope. I know an OB dr that has seen this happen before she says that there is still a chance that the baby is there. She told me this last week when I went for an u/s at almost 9 weeks and they couldnt see the baby just the sac. Although she brings hope my dr says she doesnt think it is a vialble pregnancy. I am holding onto hope as I wait for the blood tests to show my hcg levels. The most important thing I have learned in going through this is trust in the Lord. As I face a potential loss I am faced with wondering why God would do this to me. Then I remember that God has a plan for me and that plan is to prosper, not to harm. So then why would I be going through this pain. I know that although I may be facing a loss now, God has plans that are even better. I know at this point that is hard to see and hard to imagine what could be better than this baby right now. But I am trusting in Him and His plans. What we also have right now is support and permission to grieve. Remember even God has faced first a death of His child before His plans for all of us His children could be fulfilled.

Honey i know exactly what u are going through, i had the same thing happen in nov. of 2005, i went to my doc for routine checkup and they couldnt find any heartbeat, i was also 7 weeks pregnant at the time, so they did an ultra sound to try and pick it up but just like u there was a sac but it was also empty, i was suprised cause like u no symtoms of misscarriage, i was high risk already though i already had one miscarriage and preterm labor with both of my girls. What happened with me was the doc wanted to wait a week and see if anything progressed thinking mabye our dates were off and it was just to early to tell, plus just like u my hcg was rising, so we waited and i went back we did the ultra sound still nothing but my hcg was still going up so they had me wait another week, by the time it was over they had me wait almost a month untill they would for sure say that the pregnancy was not a viable one and that i would have to have a dnc for the miscarriage, even then my hcg was going up it turned out that while the pregnance wasnt progressing my placenta was still telling my body that i was pregnant so that was the cause for the rising hcg levels. I really hope that this isnt the case in urs but it is almost identical to the experiance i had with those same symtems i just hope that they wont make u wait a whole month and then they tell ya its not viable , its really hard to cope with that way because they keep telling ya that it may be to early and u get ur hopes up ya know, i will say a prayer for u for and urs and i really hope all goes well, i would also ask u if u dont mind to mabye say a little prayer for me and my unborn little boy, i was diagnosed with placenta privia last week and they were hoping that it would correct itselfbut i went to the doc. yesterday and he said that it dosent look like that will be the case, im only in the beginning of my 2cd tri im 161/2 weeks and i have already experienced some bleeding its stopped for now but it usually comes back and it can cause severe v____al hemmoraging that could cause me to bleed to death and the baby to have to be delivered emerg. c-section no matter how far along i am, im pretty scared but hopefully all will go well, im sorry to have bothered you with my problem when u are having such a worrysome and upsetting one urself. I hope that the info i gave u helps and i am sending prayers and smiles ur way for u and urs from kentucky.
