My husband and I are considering the CVS test instead of the amnio. I am 35 years old and am at 13 weeks and 4 days along. My doctor told me to come by next week for the test. I have been doing some reading and now realize it is not as simple as just a needle in the arm. Could someone who has had this test and researched it throughly let me know exactly what the procedure is??? Thank you.

Sal. I had my CVS test last year. You lay down and try to relax, the lights are turned low. They numb the area about 1or 2 inches below your bellyb___ton with this gel. They insert a needle into your skin down to the placenta, while looking at the ultra sound screen as a guide."you could look too, if ya wanted to" They pinch a bit of the placenta off for testing. Your done. It takes no more than 1 minute. I had a pillow over my eyes and couldnt beleive it was over just like that! You should get your results in approx 4 or 7 days. Let me know how it goes. Michelle, I have read that there are some risks to the fetus for limb deformities related to this test. Have you read or heard otherwise?

Sal. Yes, I've heard the same. You will have to read and sign a consent before hand explaining everything. My doctor told me the only way anything like limb deformities, ect..{that was a question of mine} could go wrong is if the doctor didnt get the placenta and got the babys arm or whatever. But see, that just dosent happen. When you can see the placenta right there on the screen. They know exactly where to insert the needle. Its a big area your placenta. So theres really no mistakeing it. Not only that, not many doctors do these CVS tests, very few are qualified here in Sacramento. So the ones who do do the procedures are extremely knowledgeable. One more thing, the chances of miscarriage with this procedure is 1%, my doctor told me that. Any more questions, just ask.
